Hi,
I've just been researching BLW and it mentioned that the baby can eat what we eat, but how would that work with spaghetti bolognese or a curry etc?! They'd have trouble picking those things up surely?!

do you put some on a spoon and then give them the spoon to feed themselves with?

You can give them a loaded spoon for some things, but otherwise it's about letting them have a go. Certain things are easier to hold than others so instead of spag bol, maybe do penne with meatballs and cut the meatballs in half for LO. Curry would be fine if the meat and veg in it are cut into stick shapes to make them easy to grab. Once LO is older and develops the pincer grasp they should be able to pick up most things.

I let LO have a go and play with the food. If she's struggling I usually put some on a bit if a rice cake. Yesterday it was dhal on rice cake. Sounds odd but rice cakes are fab as a food carrier!!

With my son we had a baby food mill and I would give him a spoon, and have one for me so he could feed himself and I could get some bits in so he was getting enough

At first Jessica struggled with things like spaghetti Bolognese and generally just sucked the sauce off. Now at 7.5 months she's a pro, she's developing a pincer grip so she can pick up bits of minced meat and she sucks up the spaghetti like a straw. I'm pretty impressed with the progress she's made already. I only use spoons when giving her stuff like Weetabix or yogurt, I pre-load the spoon and give it to her and she guides it into her mouth. There is very little food left over after a meal now.

The philosophy of blw is "food before 1 is just for fun". It's more about play and experimenting with new textures, as long as they're still getting their usual milk then there's no need to worry about how much food they're actually ingesting. They will drop milk feeds naturally as they get more efficient with self feeding which happens more easily for some babies than it does for others.

We give a loaded spoon sometimes -- you can do that, or put it on a piece of bread or whatever as a PP suggested.

In India everyone (adults too) eats curry with rice or bread with their hands! :)
