is it ok to leave it in the boiling water after its finished sterilising? how long can i still use it after its stopped boiling? i am finding it hard to fit in my expressing bc it takes 20mins to sterilise it before i can use it, and if i do it after ive fed leyla i have to wait until after shes had her top up and ive cleaned all the bottle and formula and kitchen up and by the time ive done that its time for her next feed :hissy: i figured if i could just leave it in the boiling water with the lid on and then just take it out when i needed it it would be much easier

You don't need to sterilise every time hun, I only sterilise once a day, the rest of the time they live at the back of the fridge in a sealed box.

i might be wrong but i alwasy thought 3 hours was the time limit as long as the sterile area hadn't been broken.

What she said!

Why not cold water sterilise??? You don't need a steriliser, just a big tupperware type box with a lid and some Milton fluid:happydance:. As long as you use the right amount of fluid to the correct amount of water to dilute it then just leave it in there till you need it. I only express once a day (in the morning) and then wash the pump and leave it in the steriliser till the next morning when I change the water and express again.

But as the others have said, if you're using it a few times in a day then just put the cap on either end of the pump and leave it in the fridge to prevent bacteria growth. Just wash it and sterilise it at the end of the day:happydance:

i cold water sterilise it now but i always forget to change the water so when i go to get it its not sterile :dohh: i dont have a cap on my breast pump? think i will find big plastic container and dump it in there, so good to know i dont actually have to sterilise it 8x a day!!

I don't understand why you're boil sterilising then. You only have to empty water out and then refill the steriliser with more water and Milton in the morning or evening when you're washing up the breastpump and bottles, takes less than a minute to do:shrug:

it says on the instructions u have to boil it so im just believing it lol

and the medela swing tubes only need boiling if they get milk in, which only happens if u have a really fast spurting all over the place flow, its only happened to me once, i dont usually do that otherwise

ok im still a bit confused, you know in between expressing...if ni put the breast pump into the fridge it will go cold, and if i express again into it the BM will be warm, so isnt that just the same as mixing a cold and a warm BM in one bottle? wont there still be some milk in the bottle / breast pump?

x

I think that the amount that mixes would be so small that it really wouldn't matter. I've done it for yonks now and had no problems.

I guess if I ever had to do this again ( bloody hope not!!!) I would still sterilise after every use for the first month, but once they are a bit bigger I really think it is fine. As I said, Alfie has had no problems.

so 3 months she'll be fine then, im surei read somewhere actually that u dont have to sterilise anything after 6 months?

Why dont you just detach the collection bottle from the pump and put the pump, minus the bottle in the sealed bag or container?? When you pump again use a new sterilised bottle....

12 months is recommended for sterilising breastpumps, bottles, teats etc. No need to sterilise beakers, dummies, spoon, bowls after 6months. It's the milk residue in bottles, teats and breastpumps that can make a young baby very, very sick and thorough cleaning and sterilising is the only way to avoid this.
