Just got my results back which are just in the low risk category but high for my age. They came back as 1 in 220 and I was told that if it had been 1 in 200 they'd be offering me an amnio for sure. Am so worried now and don't know what to do, they've told me I can come in to discuss the results and if I really wanted to I could possibly have the amnio. On top of that I'm so scared of needles, I can cope with small injections but the thought of that big needle makes me feel physically sick and I have been known to faint in the past. I wouldn't let it stop me in the end if I knew it was definitely the best thing to do but I don't and I'd also worry about the risk of miscarriage. Really don't know what to do

:hugs:

Just remember that it is a 219 in 220 chance that there is no problem!

When I was pregnant with my first my odds were 1-110. I didn't get the amniocentesis and she came out perfectly healthy and is developing ahead of her age group. I wouldn't worry too much: )

Mine came back low risk but was 1:250 which I thought was quite high. But if you look at the risk as a percentage its only about 0.04% (I think!, my maths is apalling!)
Either way, its still super low sweetie xx

EXACTLY!

And remember that in percentage that's tiny really. If you do go back to discuss it, just think what is best for baby. They will help you with the fear of needles if you need an amnio, they won't just wave a needle about. Hope it all works out ok for you.XX

When I was expecting first time round my friend was pregnant too, both our tests came back days apart. Mine was 1/8000 hers was 1/32 ! Obviously she was freaking out, especially with mine do high. She didn't gave the amnio, continued on and gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby! Theses tests do mote harm than good sometimes! I wouldn't dwell on it, very easy for me to say since I've not had mine yet but her test will be in the back of my mind when having it.

There's no need to have the amnio unless the result would alter the pregnancy in your mind - eg if you'd consider aborting.
I'm so sorry though, hunni. Like others have said it's still a pretty low chance

Did you have the NT scan as part of your 12 week scan?? Was that measurement ok?? Were there any other soft indicators of a problem???

With respect, I disagree - you may simply want to know for your preparation or peace of mind. The decision is yours alone - none of us are in the same situation so we can't tell you what to do.

As the others have said, the risk remains low, try not to worry. :hugs:

Thanks everyone, just been to discuss the results and we both feel much better now. They showed us a breakdown of the results and it was just my hcg that was higher than average, the other hormones were fine, and that high hcg levels at this point were an indicator but not definite at all.

We had the NT scan at 12 weeks but baby wouldn't co-operate so they couldn't take the measurement which is why we've maybe been more worried than we would have been. They are going to look for soft markers at my next scan and we'll go from there.

Thats good, at least they are not worrying you unnecessarily, and they are going to do everything that you would hope that they should to reassure you... When are they doing your next scan??

Next scan is on the 30th of November so a couple of weeks to go... Was very impressed with their attitude, don't think they could have treated us any better. Sometimes the NHS does work!

My NT scan/blood results came back 1 in 100, I know what a shock a positive result can be. I went for a CVS (like has been said, nobody can say what decision is right for you to make regarding CVS/amnio until you are in that situation - for me I was so stressed and upset by the results that I just needed to know for sure either way so I could take it from there, otherwise i would have been a wreck my entire pregnancy which wouldn't have been good for me or baby).

I too am terrified of needles, but the CVS was waaaaay less scary than I anticipated. They gave me a local anisthetic first (which was the most painful bit and actually not bad at all) and then I kept my eyes closed so I never saw the big needle. It didn't hurt I the slightest, was weird I could feel it touching my uterus but no pain at all. It was over in like 5 minutes also. In fact, the blood test the did afterwards was more painful than the CVS! I'm happy to say that all the chromosme results came back normal. Anyway I just wanted to assure you that if you do decide to go for the amnio, the anticipatoin way outweighs the reality!

Good luck - I'm sure you'll be fine, like everyone else has said, your odds are still very low and it sounds like you are in good hands.

Sweetheart at the end of the day you have to do what your comfortable with i had my results come back a week or so ago now and i have a 1 in 32 chance of down syndrome and we decided not to have the cvs/amnio but that was our choice everyone is different and make defferent decisions for different reasons but your chances of having a completely health baby are really good i thaught mine were really bad to untol i realise that out of every 100 babies theres is still around 96 born perfectly fine. Wishing you all the best and a Happy & Health 9 months xxx

Isn't there a risk of miscarriage with the amnio?
yea there is a risk 1 in 200 thats y i chose not to have the amnio as i didnt want to take the risk of m/c 1 in 32 st still a good chance as far as we ere concerned.

Isn't there a risk of miscarriage with the amnio?

Studies quote the risk as being between 1/200 and 1/1600. The large variation in miscarriage rate is thought to be related to the experience and skill of the individual who performs them.

Amnio also poses a risk of creating amniotic bands which can wrap around the baby and cause limb deformities.

 Just the blood test alone shouldn't be enough to worry you too much as they are often wrong. I hope the next u/s puts your mind at ease!
