Hi girls,

My OH really likes this name for a boy but I'm just not sure. I really like the way it sounds with our surname but it's just the bullying potential. I want something fairly calm and natural and different but not too way out and I'm worried what other people and especially family will say.

Feel free to be honest!

Honestly? I think its a bit of a silly name and its likely to open your LO upto bullys at school - kids pick on any thing that different.

My SIL had a baby a few months back and initially were going to call him something very similar but everyone kinda sniggered when she told them the name so have changed the name now

edited to add - its cute for a baby but remember a name is for life xx

Awful. Sorry, but as a teacher, I can just imagine what the poor child would go through.

It's all very well if your husband likes it, but he isn't the one that will be saddled with it at school!!

What are the names that you like?

Nahh :nope: that would open him up to bullies, they can be very cruel to things that are quite 'out there'
And like mindy said, a name is for life. Can't really think of a 19 or 30 year old called Bear :\

As a nickname - yes, as a real official name - no.

i don't think it's that bad to be honest compared to all these names everyone is calling their kids these days just to try and be different lol

it sounds okay, but i personally dont like the spelling. I think it the spelling that makes it sily idk. not like you can spell it many ways though...Behr as in danni behr?? ok maybe not !

I think as Nickname it is very good, I am a big fan of Bear Grylls, but I wouldn't use it as a main name.

Could you call him something like Edward Michael 'Bear' Surname, and then affectionately call him Bear?

Is your husband a Bear Grylls fan? Us guys love a bit of survival telly!

Its my little boys nickname that my DH made up for him, must be a man thing :haha:. xx

Use it as a middle name - and call him that if you wish. He may be happy (unless a professional sportsman) when older not to be Bear.
It may look a bit funny on a job app:-k

I think it is cute for a nickname but not a formal name. I do however like Shepard. I will put on my thinking cap for names that can warrant the nn Bear though!

Thanks girls, I don't think it's for me to be honest! I agree it sounds cute now but wouldn't be when they're older!

Yes he likes Bear Grylls so you can see where it's coming from!!

I instantly thought of Bear Grylls too. My DH constantly has him on the TV

I don't mind it, I love any name that's 'different' :)

Do you really? Is it just the sound of the word or the meaning? Just wondering because I really don't like names that are names for other things rather than names if you get me!

It made me think Bear Grylls although his formal name is Edward.
I like it as a nickname x

I quite like the name Bear. But that's only because i've got a friend whose nickname is Bear so I think it kinda suits him. On the other hand though, i'm not too sure whether it's appropriate for a proper first name. Sorry hun.

I also went to high school with a boy whose nickname was Bear. And everyone called him that, even the teachers. It suited him very well, and he never got made fun of. I think it sounds fine as a name, but I would give him a different first name and maybe go with Bear for the middle name or just a nickname.
