Hi, This is for a friend stuck in hospital at the moment. :nope:
Poor woman had an infection which her GP told her was not there, and didnt treat. She then developed an abccess and had to be admitted to hospital and have it drained. She was so desperate to carry on feeding but doesnt know what to do for the best. Its getting her down. Should she stop and wean baby off breast milk?
Is there anything anyone can recomend for her recovery? 3 days later and she still cant let them change the packing and bandages without gas and air...

Thanks for your help in advance xxxx

I did have a friend who had an abscess and stopped breastfeeding but she had had several severe bouts of mastitis and a lot of other problems, in most cases its better to continue BF is there anyone at the hospital who is a BF specialist?

It doesnt sound like it... My friend has text me to see if I can get advice for her... Thank you so much for the link. I am affraid I have nothing to offer my friend having never breast fed even, let alone gone through this...
I read somewhere continuing to express milk can be of benafit to abbcess...

I have a leaflet from LA Leche League which has a small section on breast abcesses. It says you can continue to feed from both breasts but if the affected breast is too painful or the incision is too close to the nipple you may need to hand express for a day or two. It also says that keeping your milk flowing will help the breast heal.

Hope this helps. :hugs: for your friend, mastitis is painful enough!
