Hi Ladies,

Zac started solids 3 weeks ago its been a bumpy road so far , he has been exclusivly breast fed until then. We are still breastfeeding but the problem is Zac is refusing breast after his solids I have had to give all breast feeds before his solids, he still takes all his solids after. He has also been suffering with constipation, last week he was screaming while he was going and now this week he is pushing not crying but nothing is coming out. I give him porridge with pear/apple for breakfast, and veg mixed for lunch and dinner ( butternut squash/ carrot/ sweetpotatoe). He also get some prune juice in a syringe the last 3 days. So really my question is , is it ok to give him fluids before solids? And has anyone had this experience and if so did eventually lo start taking fluids after?

Thanks

Linda x

I've always been told that you should give milk before solids. Milk is their main source of nutrients up to a year. Is he enjoying the solids and taking them well? Maybe he isn't ready yet?

THanks, I know milk is still really important and thats why I was concerned he wasnt taking after the solids. So I started to give him a full bf before to make sure he was getting milk and the fluids from milk. I started him at 5 months and at that stage he was definately ready, he loves solids ( prob a bit to much) . Just didnt know if that was normal ?

My ticker says Zac is 5month 1 week but he is 23 weeks old !! which is a week away from 6 months right ???? Or am I going bonkers

I'd have thought that was fine then, but the constipation must be awful. Could it be a particular food that's affecting him? Maybe it would be worth speaking to a HV.

I've lost track of weeks now. I tend to go on calendar months!

Well I had been giving him baby rice and some banana which i thought might be a bit heavy so i have stopped that now, and he has gone since thank god ! I just have to wait and see if he gets a little better. I am going to ring the clinic tommorrow and see what they have to say.

I know I have lost track too , but In my mind 24 weeks is 6 months ?? Am I right ? please tell me I havent lost my marbles !

Ah, glad to hear he's managed to go. Maybe that was what it was.

You haven't lost your marbles, but every month is a bit longer than 4 weeks. That's why I ended up just going by the date. It's the 22nd today and Alice was born on the 22nd August, so she's 7 months today!

months arent 4 weeks exactly so actually your LO isnt quite 5 1/2 months yet.
Have you tried stopping giving him solids for a few days to see if the problem corrects itself?

I have struggled with this too!! apparently 6 months in baby weeks is 26 weeks??!!! lol all my other boys I have called 6 months at 24!! but apparently in our red books 6 months is 26 weeks!

we are also struggling with solids and feeding!! Zack seems to not want to bf much at all  but loves his solids.....

Ye i eased off a little for a day or two and he had a movement yesterday. So hopefully he gets back to normal !

Hi Bumpty, What is it with our boys !! Same name , same problems ! Its hard work ..... I am just hopeing they start behaving themselfs soon x

i might be wrong but giving him 3 solids a day seems a bit much?? i started charlie on one a day then uped it every two weeks or so till he was on 3 meals a day maybe pushing it back to 1 might be an idea x

I'd definitely keep giving him a full bf before solids, at least then you'll know he's getting enough fluid :D

I also think that if you cut back the solids, maybe the problem is going to solve on its own.

I have been told that nothing nourishes babies more than BF, so more milk is better for them. And it helps with constipation problems too ;)

didnt want to start a new thread on same subject  but when do you stop doing this? and say give a morning bf , then lunch, afternoon bf ,then dinner then bedtime bf ?

its just I was giving full bf before solids but then he was not wanting next bf......in fact at the moment he is really messing about at all his bfs!!! I am giving solids due to advice from doc......when I spoke to HV yesterday she said its now time to start upping his solids? Im so confused!!!!!!

in the annabel karmel book it says only start reducing the milk so they are hungrier for their solids when they're about 7 months.

it's all baffling me a bit - LO has got as far as solids for breakfast and lunch at the mo - he's already dropped from 6 bfeeds to 5 which has made me nervous about offering dinner just yet in case he doesn't get enough milk. plus it doesn't feel like we are fully demand feeding anymore. i keep looking at the clock and thinking shoot he needs a feed or we're not even going to get 5 in the day!

bumpty - we've been doing milk followed by solids an hr later, not immediately after. seems to be working better for us otherwise his reflux just can't handle it all in one go.

this is all a mindfield isnt it?!!!

Milk should be the MAIN FOOD SOURCE for babies under 12 months old....so you only need to start cutting back on milk in favour of solids past 12 months.
If you have been advised to start solids early or introduce more solids than would usually be given at an earlier age by a Dr/paediatrician and you are uncertain then go back to whoever gave you the advise in the first place and ask for further advise, even ask to be referred to a nutritionist.

Oh and Ms Karmel produces lovely books and meal planners but that advise is off. See above about milk being the main food source til 12 months....heck my 5yr old wasnt eating ANY solids at 7 months old!

It is definatley a mindfield... I know that milk has to be main source of food! And thats the worrying thing ! So far I have been offereing milk first to make sure he is getting a full BF !
