Breastfeeding and dummies

Is it ok to give breastfed babys dummy, my LO is 3 weeks old and seems to be a very sucky baby, but my midwife has said not to give dummies until there about 4-5weeks and breastfeeding is well established thanks x

My baby has had one since she was born and she is BF'ing okay. It probably all depends on the baby and their nipple preference.

Same my LO has had a dummy since about 1 week old, its never caused a problem. Also, personally i'd say that if feeding has been going smoothly for both of you since birth and you've had no troubles then you're likely established enough by now. Just my opinion though :)

i would hold off as long as possible, if your LO isnt that bad there is no need to give him a dummy yet.

Otherwise id say at least wait 6-8 weeks - same with introcuding any bottles

My LO has had a dummy since the beginning...have never had any trouble and it saved the boobies a couple of times. She liked to comfort suck on them so when she started gave her the dummy.

I did at month 2 when she tried to use me as a paci...:)

We first introduced one around 4-5 weeks and nothing bad has happened. In fact, he barely will actually take it.

Don't forget there's usually a growth spurt around 3 weeks so that's why she might be a particularly 'sucky' baby atm :)

I tried giving my LO a dummy a few days after she was born, she would just spit it out and pull a funny face...
I introduced it again at 3 months! she is still BF fine and taking the dummy at night.

hope this helps
x

unless hes crying and wont settle any other way i would try and hold off giving him one. My lo had one from about 2 weeks and its caused us some problems. But everyones different. x

IJP had one from a couple of days old every now and then for a week or so and now won't touch it! Reason we gave it was the same as you, she is really sucky, but it seems only the boobs will do for now xxx

We introduced one at 3 weeks. I wish I'd done it sooner.

My LO is nearly nine months old and we introduced a dummy on day 3 for exactly the same reason as you! We have never had any problem to do with nipple confusion or anything!! She now has it to sleep with and when she is in need of abit of sucky comfort!! It has been a godsend, my nipps would have dissolved by now otherwise!!!! He he he!! Good luck in whatever you decide!! Xx

My LO has had one since about day 3 or 4!! Ive had no problems with her latching on and its still going well xx

i'm so glad i read this as i gave one to my little boy already and he's 5 days old. Doesn't seem to have affected his feeding or anything, just gives me and hubby a little more sleep in the early hours

emma has had one from 4 days- she feeds fine and it has saved my sanity!

we had issues introducing one at first he wouldnt take it but when he did it was a lifesaver now he doesnt use it often but will take it and it will help him calm down if hes overtired or cranky with teeth

my LO had a dummy from 3 weeks and it didnt mess with her breast feeding but it meant she wasnt constantly at my boob so i could rest whilst she constantly sucked away at her dummy lol :)

My LO has had a pacifier since day 5 or so, it really helps her calm down if she is overwrought or trying to fall asleep. It hasn't interfered with breastfeeding at all. The trick is knowing when they are hungry vs. just tired and cranky. When I know that she has been well fed and is just cranky, the pacifier is a big help.

from 3 wks here. i delayed and wish i would have done it earlier they make such as issue of it at hospital

my LO will get fed up of sucking o the breast after she has finiahed her feed as she likes to suck but she doesnt want the milk

i introduced it and had her weighed a week later to check weight gain was still ok and it was textbook so continued to use it

if they are hungry they wont settle with it and will spit it out xx
