Breastfeeding as contraception

Hi when i went for my 6 week check the hv asked what form of contraception i was using and when i told her breastfeeding she looked at me as if i was stupid and pushed for me to go on mini pill but said i didnt mind if we had a slip up and got pregnant so i was happy enough carrying on as i was but sje said cos of my emergency c section i shouldnt even consider pregnancy for 12 months so i agreed to put in 2 pregnancy tests then go on mini pill but when i got home and looked at info from hospital it says breastfeeding is 98% where as mini pill is only 94% so i dont think i will bother what do you think? i am ebf and sam is 10 weeks.

I used BFing as contraception for the 1st 6 months, but I also monitored my fertility by keeping an eye on discharge etc. You can get pregnant while breastfeeding, but it is unlikely. Have a look here for more info - https://www.fertilityuk.org/nfps5.html#breastfeedingslug

i used it as a contraception for 7 and a half months, did have a few scares though! my DS is 8 months now and AF has returned, and we haven't decided on anything yet!

so its worked up until now, they say you're very fertile straight after birth, i know someone who gave birth in february and december! she fell pregnant when her baby was just four weeks.

i've been advised to use mini pill whilst breast feeding, i have 2 friends that fell pregnant whilst breastfeeding, one while baby was 4 weeks old and one whilst 7 weeks old. its not that trustworthy in some cases.

Oh intereseting.

I was told by both mw and HV that breastfeeding isnt a contracpetive and I could still get pregnant even without periods, not that I am even thinking about BD yet but we are gonna use condoms like we always have done.

I got pregnant while exclusively breastfeeding Toby, he was 5months old at the time. It was a year ago this week actually
Admittedly my periods had returned and he wasn't feeding every 3 hours in the night so I should have been more careful but hey....we were on holiday.



Breastfeeding can only be used as contraceptive if.....

Baby is feeding at least every 3 hours including through the night

There is no formula, expressed bottles or food being given to baby

Your periods have not returned

No dummies are used

If it would be a disaster to get pregnant again (for some people it can be....for us it was just sooner than planned so we weren't upset by it) then I would advise using another method too. Condoms, Merina coil, mini pill maybe.

Breastfeeding shouldn't be relied on, Hevz posted lots of good info...

I know of people who have gotten pregnant withing 3 months after having their baby, they were exclusively bfing, had not even had a period yet, and still got pregnant. BTW, im in Canada so im going by Canadian info, which does not encourage ebf as contraception.
