Stupid question but how do you brush LOs teeth, or my case tooth? I've heard that your not meant to rinse after brushing, but surely you can't just leave them to swallow the toothpaste! I know it's just a smidging you use and you start as soon as the teeth come through but apart from that I'm clueless!!:dohh:

tbh my ds1 never lets me rinse his mouth lol i do rinse his tooth brush and brush more with just a wet one to rinse his teeth but he swallows or spits out most of the toothpaste, with ds2 we need to get him a toothbrush lol hes just gotten his first 2 teeth, but with ds1 i used to hold him over the sink when i brushed his teeth and he dribbled out most of the foam that i couldnt get out with just the wet brush , its not hugely important as a small amount wont hurt their digestive system its only when they start eating the toothpaste that its a problem

I'm quite lucky as Chloe likes to do it herself already. I put a tiny smear on the brush and she rubs it in her mouth. Its such a small amount I'm not worried about her eating it and don't need to rinse either. She sits in the bath when I do it.

My son "brushes" his own. I smear a very small amount of Milk Teeth (by Aquafresh) on his brush and hand it off. He watches me brush mine while he does his. He mostly just giggles at me and chews on his brush...but I figure it's important that he gets the sensation of having it in his mouth and tasting the toothpaste so it doesn't shock him. He'll have plenty of time after he's over a year and I can verbally instruct him what he should be doing.

ETA: He is 8.5 mos.

I too brush evies little pegs with a tiny bit of 0-3yr toothpaste then rinse it off the brush and do them a couple of times with just water, we too do it in the bath x

brushing my 20month olds teeth involves two adults and a head lock!

I had that with my first 2 and heading the same way with my 3rd!
On the plus side while they are screaming at least their mouths are open!!

Thanks ladies. guess I'm doing it right after all! The only problem I'm having is trying to get the toothbrush off him once we've finished, it seems to be his new favourite toy!!!lol:haha:

I have this problem too, she screams if I take it away  :haha:

i use the weleda childrens tooth gel so that when he swallowed it, it was natural, i trust it more than a fluoride toothpaste
lou does it himself, we make sure his tegs get a brush then let him chew it

The teeny bit they swallow wont do any harm, you're not meant to rinse as this rinses all the flouride away which is absorbed into the enamel. Jacob hates hates hates getting his teeth brushed, he will play with the brush and chew on the handle, the only way I can get his done easily is if I use the little finger brush that I had for when his first tooth popped up

I don't think you need to use toothpaste with babies until they're a year old, especially because of the risk of swallowing the toothpaste and ingesting too much flouride.

Brushing has been challenging for me, too. I started using a finger toothbrush with my LO at around 7 months, but she just used to try to bite it. She's 9 months and has 7 teeth already so I figured I needed an actual toothbrush for her. I've been using a little toothbrush for two weeks now, but still have to fight to get to brush her teeth, especially the top ones.

Jees's favourite thing is her mam toothbrush that we got her from boots. She'll chew on it for ages!

The dental health visitor who came out to the house told us that you don't rinse it off because they need the fluoride to sit on their teeth since we don't get in the water here. I was confused too, but she said it's okay because it's just a smear you're using.

My son hates getting his teeth brush, I have to hold him down , alot of tears and screaming. When he is in the bath and sees me putting the paste on his brush he runs to the other side of the bath lol I dread tooth brushing time he just hates it!

What? you dont rinse? oohh I am doing it wrong then oops

I use cotton buds atm basically they have two bottome teeth each which are just poking out. I will start brushes soon though.

Ok blond question then - just put toothpaste on and then NOT rinse at all?

Yep. Just a smear though. It says that on my package of Milk Teeth. I do enough just to lightly coat the tops of the bristles.

Yup, our dentist even said not to use a wet toothbrush as it will water it down.. or something like that. I do use a cloth and just kinda swipe gently inside her mouth afterwards since it does seem to foam up a bit. We were also told to start brushing her gums and tongue before her teeth even came in just to get her used to it. Like I said before she adores her toothbrush now. :)

I didn't know this either!! It was a couple off work colleagues that told me that, as I asked them if I needed to use cool boiled water or water straight from the tap!! I didn't quite believe them hence the post. Thanks again ladies!!!x
