I may have read wrong somewhere but I was under the impression to avoid caffeine
I suffer terribly from migraines and the only pills that work before it goes full on is some aspirin, paracetamol and caffeine pills. Before I went to the doctor I just went to bed when I had one last week. However when I mentioned it to the doctor at the weekend he said there are no studies to prove it does damage and to take them not often but when I need to?!
Please someone clarify if it is ok

I have always been told by midwives to stick to under 200mg a day, but I know a lot of caffeine tablets contain a lot more than that. Personally I have cut out caffeine altogether as it worries me and my son suffers with severe migranes and we were advised to make sure he has a fully caffeine free diet as it can in fact make migranes worse. I'd speak to your doctor again, they will be able to advise you better than anyone.

I think its that you can have 250mg a day

If the tablets are more than that, try taking only half of one. But yes talk to your dr about it. Too much caffine is not good but you can have some.

I try to avoid caffeine altogether. I drank lots of green tea during my last pregnancy which resulted in having extremely low iron levels. I did not realise that green tea also contains tannin (also in ordinary tea) which reduces the absorption of iron. I stick to fruit tea or very week green tea. (max 1/2 a day)

Baby aspirin was on your list of things that work yes? I'm on baby aspirin with this pregnancy as I have a blood clotting issue. Can you take that? It's safe during pregnancy. I have a coffee every now and then in the morning and green tea in the afternoon, low doses of caffeine is ok. Too much caffeine, however, can leach your body of the nutrition/nutrients that baby needs which can result in low birth weight. (I've linked a study below)

Caffeine helps with circulation, have you tried working out? I know it's the last thing you want to do when you have a head ache, my gf gets migraines and during her 2 pregnancies she had to come off her serious migraine medication and instead she went for speed walks and said it helped. I hope you find relief soon.

As a severe migraine sufferer myself, I know what you're going through :( The ONLY thing that would work on me before I got pregnant was Excedrin Migraine and that's a no no during pregnancy, so I've tried Tylenol Extra Strength, along with a coca cola and a cold, wet facecloth on my forehead, and it's actually worked pretty well for me! Not sure if the same thing would work for you, but it may be worth a shot :) And hopefully you'll be like me and rarely ever get migraines during your pregnancy...I used to have AT LEAST 2-3 migraines per month before I got pregnant, and now, since getting pregnant last August, I've only had 2-3 migraines during the entire 7 months! And the migraines I've had while pregnant haven't been nearly as bad as before. The only bad one I got was the morning before I found out I was pregnant (at around 3-4 weeks pregnant). Unfortunately I didn't realize I was pregnant, so I took Excedrin, but baby is fine and my doctor told me not to worry about it; just not to take it again. Hope you feel better and find something to help your migraines.

Thanks for all your help ladies, the pills I take only contain 45mg per tablet so that's way in the limits. Thankfully I haven't taken any yet though which is great and I don't drink tea or coffee so don't need to worry about that :)

Yeah then i wouldnt worry at all about the caffine as you are all good with that amount :)

Now I'm worrying about nail varnish and hair dye...will this never end haha! :dohh:

I think as a once in a while thing for the sake of your migraines, I wouldn't worry too much about going over the recommended dose of caffeine. But sounds like your tablets are well within limits anyway. I had terrible migraines with my first but luckily, this time, none so far.

You can get amonia free hair dye...dont stress too much about other things.

I was seeing a specialist and every time I was in his office there were people from all over the world who had come to see him specifically...so I trust his expertise!

He didn't want me having any caffeine in the first 10 weeks or so because they weren't sure if my pregnancy was going to be high risk or not and he wanted me to treat myself as if I were made of glass! Once he determined the baby was growing at the average rate and I was doing well, he said I could have the recommended amount of caffeine "if I felt that it is what I needed". In other words, if it's going to help you, have a cup!

He also said hair dying and nail polish were fine, just do them an area that can be ventilated so I'm not sitting in heavy fumes for an hour. He said even that is probably fine, but it would not hurt to avoid it. I've dyed my hair twice and DHs twice (been too lazy to paint my nails much) and I turned on a fan and propped the door open - but mostly for my own peach of mind :)

Good luck!
