can i refuse rotavirus vaccine ?

My 8 week old has his vaccinations 2moro.. He was 6 weeks prem and i am dreading it.....I really dont want him to have the rotavirus one as it can cause upset tum etc...My 2 year old is perfectly fine and she didnt have it...any thoughts?

Yes you can. I am VERY pro-vax but it's the one I would avoid.

I really feel its not nessasary and ive read about it, its a live vaccine and i just feel hes so vulnerable as it is..spent 2 weeks in nicu.... just dont want them to pressure me 2moro when i go..Im not v confident ...

You can refuse any vaccine you want. You might get a nurse that pushes it (we got one that was visibly unimpressed with our refusing the flu shot) but if you're not comfortable with it, then just say so.

You can refuse it. I understand your concern. I was a nervous wreck about it frankly!

But I recommend getting it. My LO had a bit of messy diapers for 24 hours, but I have no regret about getting it because actual rotavirus is way worse, and in some cases it can be very serious.

An upset tummy is really no reason to not get it and you will breathe a lot easier for years if you give it. Just my opinion. Good luck with the appointment, I know it's heartbreaking seeing them get shots!

Yes, as said above I am in support of this vaccine, but being firm about what we think is right for our family is a good skill to have! It's hard sometimes to push back against doctors, isn't it? (Usually I do what the doctor says but...)

We had the first dose, big mistake. I was umming and ahhing about it and eventually decided to get it, we were up the hospital in the evening as she was fighting for breath crying like she's never cried before, I was terrified. She was poorly and in a lot of pain.

I refused dose 2, the nurse just accepted it in my case.

I refused the 2nd dose after the awful side effects from the first. I think the nurse was a little taken aback but tough. My baby, My choice.

Not necessarily. My LO has had no reaction to it at any time, so you may be fine.

I had rotavirus as a kid and was hospitalized for a week, was very ill and it was pretty scary for my parents so I opted to get the vac for my LO last week. He didn't seem to have any bad side effects other than being extra sleepy and a little grumpy. He did have 4 shots that visit so I probably wouldn't have known the culprit if he did have a reaction. BUT, you should do what feels right to you. I'm not sure how common the virus is these days, I've never heard of anyone I know having it.

I was concerned as my little one has is 4 month needles today. But checked my book and realised he had that vac at 6 weeks and it had no bad effects on him.

IMO it's better to have a little upset tummy than be in agony and maybe becoming very I'll from the actual virus.

our first rota vaccine was hell, waking up every hour for a week, clearly tummy issues. Second one didn't even notice it happened. I am sure you can delay, but do research all cons if your LO actually gets the virus.

My LO had the vaccine to stop the spread of stomach bugs. I'm not worried about him having a bug as he was term and is very healthy, but some people aren't. I wish people would be more altruistic when thinking of vaccinating and less insular. If it gives your baby an upset stomach it'll be VERY short term. In fact, my LO didn't react at all to the vaccine. My thinking is why would the medical community offer a vaccine on the NHS if it wasn't so beneficial to public health that it became cost effective.

My daughter got the vaccine the first time round and was horribly sick with diarrhea and incredibly fussy for 2 weeks afterwards. When I told her dr, he recommended skipping it in the future because some babies just don't tolerate it well and upsets their GI tract.

So yes, you can certainly decline it

Of course you can, it's up to you whether or not you vaccinate your child. Personally I agree with HKateH on this one but if you feel you've looked into both sides of the argument surrounding this vaccine then stand your ground.
