Any Canadian ladies here getting elective C sections? I had a vaginal birth first time around but would like an elective C section the next time. Did you find it difficult to get it - was it requested or was it recommended by OBGYN?

Unless there is a medical issue I'm not sure that you can simply request one. I'm doing the opposite and attempting a VBAC, as the recovery is much more difficult after a C-Section.

I'm not sure if mine is a medical issue or not, I had shoulder dystocia with the first (he had his collarbone fractured to pull him out, other complications are erbs palsy or still birth), and I've been reading I'm at a much higher risk next time around.

i think the decision will be made by the healthcare professionals involved... they'll probably wait to see if there are any complications before bringin up the subject of a c-section.
not 100% sure bout canada... but in the uk c-sections aren't mentioned unless absolutely neccesary.

I was given the option with my first as they knew he was going to be big, my dr just offered it to me and I chose not to, Im pretty sure its up to the dr, but most dr's would rather a csection since they make more money and they can do it on their time. Maybe with your previous experience they wouldnt have an issue but Im not really sure.

I disagree that most doctors would 'rather a c-section' for their patient in order to 'make more money'. My OB in both my daughter's birth, which was c-section due to her being transverse and in this birth wants what is safest for myself and baby. I had two different OB's and in this pregnancy I was advised of the risks for both c-section and VBAC and after much thought and discussion it was determined I was a good candidate for a VBAC. Never once did my OB try to persuade me to go for a repeat C.

Do OB's make more money doing a C section? I was under the impression they do in the US but how does that work up here?

It's a surgery so I assume the cost is much higher, including the fee charged by the surgeon performing the procedure. That being said, I can't imagine an OB would push C-Sections to increase their earnings!

Hmm interesting! Well I will have to speak with an OB before TTC, I won't be having anymore if I can't get a C section. I can't do that again TBH, I almost lost him and won't risk it the next time around.

It was never an elective option with my OB-GYN. I had a c-section with my first but only after labor failed to progress after my water breaking, induction medication, and 20 hours of labor. Even when he was breached, a c-section wasn't offered. It was only once my son's heartrate began to fluctuate indicating stress that the c-section option was put on the table.

I was, however, offered the option of a second c-section or VBAC with this baby very early on (at my 16 week appointment we made the final decision).

Hope this helps :)

Yep, C-Sections are a lot more expensive - in Spain a vaginal birth is approx €3,000 and a C-Section is nearer €6,000....

Would you mind giving me your OB's info? I am in the Toronto area and looking for an OB for elective section. Thanks!
