No matter what I try I wake up lying on my back in the middle of the night and in the morning... I hope Im not hurting our little one...

Ive just ordered a wedge type pillow from Ebay that has a wedge at the front and one at the back so it should force me to sleep on my side.

Its going to take a while to arrive so in the meantime am I doing anything to harm baby by sleeping on my back? Ive tried wedging pillows between my legs and other things but I still wake up on my back!

I wouldnt worry about this in between now and the pillow coming, I still sometimes sleep on my back now and no harm done and some women arent even aware of the correct 'recommended' position of sleeping on your left hand side. Just try and turn yourself over when you do wake on your side after doing it. A pillow behind you may help x

I'm sleeping on my back too - I have a bad neck so its really hard to sleep on my side. I asked the midwife about it and she said not to worry and it's only when i get to 35 weeks + that i'll probably need to wedge myself on to my side somehow! I still wake up feeling like i have a flat belly and the babies dissapeared though! :-S

Dont' worry about it hon. Its still early yet. I was the same (and am this time too) and there came a point a bit later (don't ask me when exactly! :dohh:) when it was VERY uncomfortable to be on my back - made me feel sick and faint and dizzy and SORE. Bubs'll tell you when its not such a good idea anymore...
:hugs:

they tell you to try and avoid sleeping on your back because the baby's weight would press on a major artery so I wouldn't worry about doing any harm to the baby but it might make you feel sick and dizzy and lightheaded eventually so the pillow is a great idea.

I like to sleep on my back though so know it's difficult. It's still early for me anyway in terms of weight of baby but I'm trying to sleep as much as poss on my sides or i prop myself up with lots of pillows and sleep in a sort of propped up position

I gave up tbh, I get uncomfy quickly and do quite a few rolls regularly during the night. My mum said it won't be a problem until it makes me dizzy. I had a scan last week and alls well despite this so don't worry xx

hon i feel you!! I lie on my left side and i get a dead leg and it cramps terribly! Move over onto the other side and same thing! I do worry but it's pure bliss to lie flat on my back and i guiltily do it for about 15 minutes then literally force myself to turn to my left side... Now I toss and turn no end not finding ANY comfortable position. Not that I'm too big (not yet anyway!), it's that every which way I sleep is just not comfy at all :(

It said in my book that it would make me poorly, not the baby :)

I think if it was doing any harm you would feel ill when you woke up, maybe enjoy it while you still can :)

I love sleeping on my back and always woke up on my back even though i'd try my sides. So i too bought a wedge pillow and it's quite good at keeping me on my sides.. only thing is i heard we are meant to sleep on our left but i always end up switching to the right otherwise i get uncomfy.

I find it uncomfy sleeping on my back now it gives me serious back ache, so i bought a pregnancy pillow and that really helps when sleeping on my side xx

Thanks for posting this it's answered all my questions reading what you have all said, ive been finding it really difficult sleeping on my side i have just got used to going to sleep on my side but i wake up during night and in a morning on my back, hopefully as the baby grow's i'll find it more comfortable sleeping on my side. x

ok im a bit worried now i always sleep on my back !!!
i have bad hips if i sleep on my side i wake up in pain otherwise they are fine not sure what to do now ? x

I've read in a few places that you CAN sleep on your back, sort of. If you put a pillow behind you, and then when you are on your back, try and make sure the pillow in half under your back. That way you aren't completely on your back, but it may be a heck of a lot more comfortable than sleeping on your side. This is how I sleep (with the pillow half under me, on my back) and it's literally the only way I CAN sleep lately. Give it a try ;).

Same here every position seems uncomftable some nights :(

Sucks when u have to get up for work and have spent the whole night tossing and turning :(

I sleep on my stomach and on my back at 21 weeks. My doctor told me it's such a difficult thing for a pregnant woman to find a comfortable position to sleep in that whatever I find most comfortable doing is okay with him. Seeing as I toss and turn so much no harm done I guess. Sleeping on my side tugs at my stomach. I also lose circulation throughout my legs so... I'm not stressing about it. Probably time to invest in a body pillow:)

I find that I'm waking up in the middle of the night due to cramps and I usually discover I'm on my back! Quite keen to find a body pillow too!

I've always slept on my stomach but I've got a little hard bump now so I can't - it just too uncomfortable and I wake up needing to pee every hour if I do!!

Now I've got into this habit of waking up on my back - I think I've been lying that way for a few hours at least. So worried that I'm going to hurt that baby as I've heard it sends less oxygen lying on your back :-(

I've just bought a memory foam mattress topper which is rubbish, doesn't help me to sleep!! And a huge memory foam pillow to hug which helps but I still seem to roll away from it and end up on my back.

I have a really sore uncomfortable back just now - I'm a teeny frame and height and I think my bump is changing my posture and making me sore! Lying on my side leaves me with a sore back.

Need to try something else tonight - maybe shoving some thin pillows under one side of my back to stop me lying flat?

18 + 0 xx
