I have always loved the name Casper, however OH completely ruled it out when we had our first. He's now admitted he likes the sound of it but can't shake the 'friendly ghost' reference!

What do you think? Is it always going to be associated with the Disney ghost now or can it be a viable option? I met a 5 year old Casper recently at my son's swimming lesson and it put the idea back into my mind again, I really love it!

Ah, have to admit I saw the subject and thought, "... the friendly ghost?".

Sorry. ;)

It's probably only our generation that will know that reference. If you like it, go for it, it is actually a cute name. Plus, I had a cat called that once. He was awesome.

I don't think it's a good idea... I already imagine his classmates making fun of him later on....

I actually really like it. Kids are always going to associate a name with something.

I wouldn't... i can already hear "the friendly ghost" taunts ... plus both of you have to be happy with the name :flower:

I don't think I could ever disassociate it with "the friendly ghost".
I think it would probably be a no for me.

If I asked my 5yo son if he knew who Casper the friendly ghost was he would say no.

I don't think it relevant it does spring to mind but that's only from older people.

I love dexter and can't shake the laboratory or serial killer association. Although kids will not know of these so I'm gonna go for it!

What's your 1sts name? Xx

Our son is Micah. We're not TTC until May but I can't resist looking at names already!

I think Casper is super cute! Yes, I think of the ghost, but I don't think that's teasing - I just think it's pretty bad a$$ lol.
I'd consider spelling it Kasper because I prefer K over C but I'd definitely go for it if both you and OH like it!!

Nah it's so common now that it's a completely normal name and not too ghost associated. It's a bit like Felix- weird a decade ago but not now. I love the name and it goes great with Micah.

I dont think kids of today know who casper the ghost is :)

In my opinion Casper isn't a good name choice for a baby, sorry. I agree most kids wont know the ghost association but the rest of the population will.

Love it.

His peers probably won't make the association and surely a grown adult wouldn't tease a kid about their name, so who cares? It's not a bad association anyway, even if someone brought it up I could think of a thousand things worse than being compared to a friendly ghost. :haha:

I'm having the same dilemma! I want to use it this time but DH not overly keen and the ghost association from people is a bit of a shame.. I've never even seen the film Casper myself.

Ps. Mind you, I didn't have a good reaction on here to my other two boys names either.... :D

Sidney Michael (Michael a family tradition) and Vincent Maximus

Nothing wild but the reactions on here were a bit 'meh' lol. I quite liked that in a way :haha:

I like Casper. It's unusual but not unusual f that makes sense. I do like names that are a bit different. I think it goes well with Micah and the ghost association thing wouldn't stop me.

We have Jarvis and initially got the Jarvis Cocker thing and if we have another boy this time we will be using Huxley which reminds people of either Aldous Huxley (which is fine!) or Huxley Pig (not great!) but once people get over that, they then only see your child for themselves and they kind of become the name and over shadow the association.

I love it. Was on my list if number 2 was a boy. I think the ghost thing is fairly dated and it isn't a particularly bad connection anyway. I also like Caspian.
