Has anyone else tried it? Heard about it working??

Hubby and i bought some 2day and i just took some then went for a walk! we'll see if anything happends!! :) its REALLY gross though!!!

Yeh I don't wana scare u at all hun, it's up to u if u choose to use it obviously but I've heard a few bad things about it, mainly from girl on here!! Apparently it can put baby in stress, but I've never used it this is just what I've read on here x

Just no.

Its alright trying fun stuff, but think this is taking it too far.

Can be very dangerous to unborn baby. They will come out when they want, like it or lump it im afraid.

I was reading ways to supposedly bring on labour lastnight on the net, and every website i read said not to try castor oil for the reasons mentioned above. (im not thinking of doing it yet i mean lol)
xxx

I tried it with my first, it didnt do anything.

I was told at my prenatal classes that it doesn't actually cause the baby to "poo"...the problem with it is that it can seriously dehydrate the mother, which can become dangerous for both mother and baby.

its done now honey, and i can't imagine it will do much damage right now, but i wouldn't do it again! its dodgy stuff that castor oil!

:)

yeah this is what i was told too.

I have friends who took it, and both were fine, but said that it was an awful way to start labour, they were so sick!!!

like i said before, i wouldn't worry, but just bin the stuff.... its nasty! :)

Meconium during labour--self-medication and other associations.

Prior to artificial rupture of membranes, 498 women were questioned about obstetric and social factors including self-medication during pregnancy. Meconium passage was more common in women who had recently taken castor oil and possibly herbal substances called 'sihlambezo.'

The mother’s dehydration may be associated with a higher risk of the baby passing meconium – his or her first stool - into the amniotic fluid.

Idk, maybe the dehydration increases the chance? Not the actual castor oil itself but it's effect on the mother cause dehydration?

I don't think it's really likely you will have this happen to you OP but if I were you I wouldn't take more castor oil.

Why don't people research what they do, especially when they are pregnant? I'm sorry but if I knew nothing about what I was putting in my body or the side effects it could have on me or the baby I would ask my doctor! If they weren't available I would do some internet research and look at, at least 10 pages! Its such a risk to try to take castor oil to induce labour!

it can make you very sick and you may go into labor quickly (a cousin delivered the baby in the car an hour after drinking it) But I am more apt to try less dangerous methods like dtd and pineapple! lol

I'm sure this thread will get all heated but I'm going to post my experience with castor oil (I've copied it from a previous thread about it). I honestly don't think it's as bad as many want to claim and studies have been made that show there is no proof it causes distress, makes the baby poo...etc. But as with anything, read and gather info and make your own opinion.

* * * * *

I tried using it (a couple times actually) during my first pregnancy. It never worked and never helped me go in to labor.

It did however, cause me to throw up, have diarrhea (almost instantly) and have a ton of contractions. I tried it when I was somewhere around 36 weeks and again at 38.5 weeks (somewhere around those time frames, I don't remember exactly).

It's nasty to drink on your own. It tastes like Vaseline (petroleum jelly). It was terrible mixed in with Coke (it was a funny story, at a restaurant with friends, they were watching me do it, took a sip and threw up all over the table! Thank goodness I was obviously pregnant and everyone around me rushed to my aid. I obviously didn't tell them I caused myself to throw up by attempting to drink C.O.) and worse mixed in with orange juice (I think that was the suggestion drink on some websites). I was able to drink it with chocolate milk (stirred it up VERY good so it looked like a bunch of oil bubbles on the top). I had a very hard time drinking it still due to the taste but managed to down it by plugging my nose, closing my eyes and drinking quickly. I tried to convince myself I was drinking a Frappachino (frozen drink from Starbucks - same consistency as a milkshake basically).

Yuck. Seriously, it fuc*ed me up. I scarred myself for life and am now unable to drink store made chocolate milk without flashbacks of the nasty Castor oil drink. The thought of Castor oil alone turns my stomach and makes me want to vomit. I actually had to stop writing this post 2 times because I was about to hurl...I've heard using it CAN cause some to go in to labor but I was unsuccessful and 5.5 years later it still affects me psychologically!

So if you DO go this route, find a proper drink to mix it with. Chocolate milk, for me, was the best because the bubbly, oily texture reminded me of a thick milkshake (it doesn't taste good though, remember that!). And stay close to the toilet because within 5 minutes your bottom will be exploding! After all, it IS supposed to be used as a form of laxitive...

With my second, I swung on a swing. Didn't go super high or anything but enough to give gravity a boost. My 2nd daughter was born within 2 days.

With both I also drank a lot of rasberry tea. Definitely can give you contractions/braxton hicks but not always. My dr said it's ok to drink anytime really (within moderation, as with most things) because it helps strengthen a woman's uterus and drinking it too early won't cause pre-term labor or anything. I drink it often now and it'll sometimes give me a BH or two but I remember drinking it late in pregnancy and it giving me a ton of them.

Either way, good luck and be safe.

I used it with my first. He had meconium. He has had serious problems in his life health wise. I have no proof the meconium caused this but I will never forgive myself. I know you've already done it but don't do it again.

I would not go near castor oil with a barge pole unless under the direction and supervision of a medical professional. It can case the baby to poo in the womb, which can cause serious problems, and also cause you to crap thru the eye of a needle too, baby will come out when good and ready!

I havent tried it,

But i wanted to post because youv got the same due date as me :D tell you what, you try the castor oil and ill eat 20 pineapples and we can race eachother :D xxx

wow! i wasnt looking for all these negative comments but you have a right to your own opinion but i wasnt asking if you thought it was a good idea since i have already taken it Obviously. If i thought it would harm my baby i wouldnt have taken it and i HAVE dont lots of research on it. Dr and midwives give it to people to this day and its over the counter...not like its poison or anything. Im not looking to fight just wanted to know peoples experiences!!

For those who gave me their experiences thank you!! thats all i wanted.

It gave me Diarrhea and thats all nothing else no contractions....yet.

Ok, sorry, but this gets my goat. Negative? You asked about a subject on an open public forum. Sorry you didn't get the rose and candy answers you wanted. Doesn't the fact that there are so many comments about what harm it can do, set alarm bells for you?

Fellow members are not saying these things to piss you off or attack you, or criticise your behaviour, they are telling you because its facts and can cause problems in pregnancy and they as pregnant females care about what happens to you and the baby.

You're right .. midwives do give it .. under medical supervsion. You aint a Dr, and the internet isn't a source I'd trust with "its fine and will cause no harm". And yes, it's over the counter, but I bet money on the bottle it doesn't stipulate its use to bring on labour. It's actually marketed as a laxative.

At the end of the day, your baby, your body, you're going to do as you will, but don't get pissy when people give you honest advice on a subject that has facts, it can cause more harm than good when not supervised.

Castor oil has been used to induce childbirth in pregnant women, though it is not always effective in application. Castor oil, when ingested, triggers cramping in the bowel (making it an effective laxative). Thus, it is intended that such cramping extend to the uterus. In an overdue pregnancy in which the mother's cervix is already effacing and partially dilated, this cramping can lead to labor contractions. The irregular, painful contractions of castor-oil-induced labor can be stressful on the mother and fetus. It also leaves the laboring woman quite dehydrated as a result of the vomiting and diarrhea which result when the recommended dose of castor oil for labor induction is taken—2 oz, or about 4 tbsp. This leaves her without access to the energy she could otherwise derive from food or drink throughout her labor process. Using castor oil for induction is not recommended without consulting a medical practitioner and is not recommended in a complex pregnancy.
