OK, so I have this changing table (see pic below) and I have a couple questions about safety...the table is extra long so there's plenty of space to put wipes, etc. alongside the changing pad.

1. The changing pad we just bought just sits on top of the dresser, it doesn't attach to it or anything, is that how they usually are or is there some kind of strap we need to attach it to the table? although the way the table is built I would have no idea how to do that...

2. I've read that some changing tables come with baby safety straps, which ours doesn't...are they not really necessary or should we buy straps separately? again I would have no idea how to attach them...

3. Is it safe to put a table lamp at the far end of the table or should we find another place for it?

Sorry if these are dense questions, of course I am a first time mom!

:shrug:its a nice cherry changing table...i think its better to use strap...i m still confuse ...should i use changing table or not...it doesnt seem safe...i think its much better to change diaper on bed..

Hi sweetie, that is a "beautiful" changing table I really like it!!! Alot of changing pads that you put on top of the table come with a safety strap with them, some strap to the changing table it self.

We bought a nursery changing pad to use with are baby girl, it has a safety strap attached to it. We plan on putting it on top of her dressing table while she a infant but when she gets bigger we will put her on the floor and change her there. We want to desinate one area in the house for diaper changes LOL. No idea if that helps. If you don't feel comfy with your changing table is it possible to make a few changes?

Thanks girls, after looking closer at the changing pad, that does have a strap for the baby on it, as well as a strap that is supposed to attach to the changing table, I still have to figure out how. So I guess those questions are answered...what about putting a lamp at the end of the table though? Should I just find somewhere else for it?

In theory straps shouldn't be necessary as you should never be more than an arms reach from baby on the table - whther strapped in or not!! Thats the theory anyway....not sure what it is like in practice!

I agree with frippy, the straps ain't needed at first as you shouldn't move anywhere away from baby, Obviously as baby gets a little older & becomes a wriggler the straps maybe needed. I would imagine you would remove top drawer & thread strap through to the back of the drawers if there is a gap if not just put a hole in & thread strap through then replace top drawer. Cant think how else really.

Regards lamp i dont see why you can put a lamp there, Its not as though baby can get it so i would put one there hun yep :)

its got 3 sides surely u wouldnt need a strap unless you were planin on leavin the baby unsupervised,
personally i dont think changin tables are needed, just a changin mat on the floor is just as good with less risk :D

Just a thought... how about a piece of that rubber anti-slip matting stuff they have for putting under rugs / table runners etc. underneath it? And underneath the lamp!

You know that's what I was thinking too but when I googled changing table safety it seems like most sites recommended those straps...I have no idea what I'm doing so google has been my biggest source of info, but then there's so much conflicting info there!

NJ...the pad does have anti-slip things on each corner of the bottom of it, maybe something like that for under the lamp would be good. I'm sure it will be fine, I just wanted some other opinions, thank you all!

I dont have a changing table just a chest of draws that i plan on putting the change mat on, no straps or anything. I cant imagine letting go of baby when they are that high up anyway and there is a single bed in there room so will prob just use that. The matching changing top for the draws cost £60 so i didnt think it was worth it, might be wrong though.
I would put the light elsewhere, depending on how hot it got. Although unlikely I would be paranoid that babs might kick it.

Mine has ledging all around the edge and came with a safety strap but i didnt put the strap on as dizzy said i dont plan on going anywhere while changing baby lol maybe when he gets older but for now i have no strap. With yours not having an edge you may want to look into something along the lines of a curved change mat with a strap on it. They make them and there curved in the center to kind of keep baby in the middle an have a strap built into them might be your best bet
