So my LO is 9 weeks old. She is EBF. For the last few weeks she's hasn't been going poop every day. She did too stints of 4 days apart and is now going every other day. She never gets fussy about it and it's the right consistency when she does go (just a lot of it!). We saw the doctor today (wellness visit) and while she wasn't overly concerned she'd like her to be going every day. She recommended going her a proboitic. I'm totally comfortable with that as both myself and my OH take them. She also recommended taking her to see a chiropractor if we were comfortable with it. She gave us a name that she takes her son to. I've never been to one. I was just wondering if anyone has taken their child to one.

Has your doctor ever read ANYTHING about breastfed babies?! It's totally 100% normal and healthy for a breastfed baby to go days between poos, even over a week is normal, because breastmilk is so perfect for babies that there is very little waste left over after the baby has digested what they need. Formula is different because it's not perfect and there is a lot of waste left over, but even then going every other day is fine and normal.

I'm not against chiropractors or osteopaths at all, far from it, I know they can work wonders, but I do wonder why your doctor would tell you to go to one for something that is totally normal. It's kind of like she's said "Hmm yes, well your baby breathing oxygen is ok but I suggest you go to a chiropractor to get it sorted" - totally unnecessary unless there are other issues? If your baby is happy and comfortable and healthy, I would not do anything.

Like I said the dr wasn't overly concerned. She just talked about how developing regular bowel movements now helps with the future. The concern came in some with the amount my LO was going after not going for a few days. It seems like she was holding it up. The doctor was fine if we just wanted to keep an eye and go back to going every day/ every other day (which is what she had been doing) but was giving suggestions on what we could do to help.

Being regular doesn't mean you have to go every day, its normal to go 2/3 days with out pooing if that's what's normal for that person/baby.

I'm an Osteo and do treat babies and children.

As the others have said going EO day is completely normal. If she wasn't going then have very bad explosive poo then I'd say there maybe a slight digestive issue. When babies/toddlers are very constipated they can have explosive diarrhoea around the blockage.

There's no harm in a check up. You could try some gentle abdo massage, just circling the tummy slowly in a click wise direction.

The amount actually DOES have EVERYTHING to do with it, despite what everybody is saying. It's no different than you and me, as adults. When we get blocked up we have a LOT of it. Probiotics are good, my son actually was on one, but you need to be careful because their bodies DO build up a tolerance to them. They got to where they didn't work with him anymore, and I am contemplating taking him to a chiropractor as well. First hand experience, chiropractors DO help with bowel movements..just letting you know, lol.

It can't hurt, at all. Just let the chiropractor check her out and make sure all is well, and if it is, great, you shouldn't need any more visits, if not, great you caught something to nip it in the bud ;)

Thanks. We are going to try the probiotics first and see how things go. Depending on how that goes, we will at least meet with the chiropractor.

It's totally normal for a BF baby to go days without pooping because they absorb so much of the breast milk that there is very little waste

That said, we do take my LO to the chiropractor and have since she was a couple of weeks old
She had terrible colic and some issues with her hips and neck from being breech and the chiro helped sort out the neck/hip issues and in the early days provided her with a bit of relief from the tummy pain
