Anyone out there try cloth diapering? I am considering it because of the cost of diapers. No offense to anyone, but none of this is out of concern for the environment, it's strictly economics/vs ease of use, etc for our family! We have a 16 month old and used disposables because cloth diapers seem so intimidating to use not to mention expensive! But with the cost of disposables, and another one on the way I am rethinking it. So, what do you all think of it? Is it inconvenient, as far as having to deal with the poo, etc, and when you're out and about you can't just throw it away. Also, I've only found one that seems to fit in my budget which is Sun Baby diapers, and I don't know if those are good or not. How many do you recommend buying? Any other tips would be great. I am on the fence but trying to decide, and even if I do decide to do it my DH is staunchly against it as he just wants to throw the poo away not have to worry about flushing, etc.

After trying a bunch of fancy stuff, I love just using a prefold, a snappi and a shell. Like the thirsties duo. Those are the easiest. And I love it, oh and I both find it very fulfilling! And ds is much cuter in a cloth bum.

I do cloth and looove it. I use prefolds and shells for the daytime and pockets with extra inserts at night. Its so easy (in my opinion) and really really cute so there's no reason to use disposies. Actually I think the disposable smell a lot worse. You DO have to make sure you get good soap and diaper rash stuff that is cloth compatible. Charlie's soap is the most well liked here, although I use All Free and Clear and it works great!

Personally I like to have enough diapers to get through two days (so that's like 4-5 shells and 4 pockets, with 24 prefolds) And that's quite a few shells for her to poop/pee through. When she starts solids I might think differently, but honestly its been super easy so far. You can look on the natural parenting area for more information - Rachel_C has a lot of good threads and information

I've found FuzziBunz nappies are the BOMB - sooo easy to use and they dry so quickly. They are just as convenient to use as disposables. The poop issue, well, you can use a flushable, biodegradable liner and you're sorted. Just buy one used on eBay and see how you get on with it, and if you like it you can slowly build your stash that way.

Hi I cloth nappy - and find it super easy I use the all in one types which are super easy and as Long as I stay in a good routine with the washing I never have any issues!! My only advice is make sure u've got plenty I have one load for the day one load in the wash and one load drying -- with a few extras -- definitely economic especially as disposies did nothing but leak anyway!! I also personally think cloth nappies are super cute!!

I'm having a hard time understanding what pockets, prefolds, shells, all in ones, are? And how many of each do you need? What are the differences? Honestly I don't want to spend $20 on the setup for one diaper. I see the Sunbaby diapers are diapers and inserts but that sounds different than what you all are describing?

All in ones are literally that -- the look like a disposies and u put it on in exactly the same way -- except it's made of cloth and does up with Velcro at the front -- u can just throw them straight in washing machine but the ones I have can't be tumble dried!! I have some inserts -- which are like a cloth sanitary towel and they can be put inside the cloth nappy for extra absorbency like night times, long car rides etc -- can't help on the others but thought I'd explain all in ones (AIOs) - I have 30 altogether x

I have friends that love Sunbaby diapers, I personally haven't tried them though.

I'd try a few different brands out before you commit to a whole bunch though.

My personal favourite is Kawaii. They're cheap and we've never had a leak in them.

If you go over to Natural Parenting there's a sticky thread that explains the differences between prefolds, fitteds, pockets, etc.

It can be really overwhelming at first - I have found (at my local store) there are basically three types of diapers that I can easily get to. All in ones, pockets, and shells/prefolds.

All in ones are basically like washable disposables! One used, then you put the whole diaper in the wash.

Pockets are like all in ones, but you stuff them themselves. I like them because I can stuff them even more at night, and it helps my LO sleep better

Shells/prefolds are more like the old school but sooooo much easier. You can just literally lay the prefold in the shell and snap it (or velcro) it up.

Oh okay, so those expensive ones that are like $20 are the shells? And you can use those over and over before you have to wash them if you put the prefold in right? That's not too bad then if that's the case.

I definitely recommend trying out a few different brands. I bought like 10 different brands to try on LO and the only pockets that fit her were Fuzzibunz
I didn't like prefolds. Fitteds were great for at home but really bulky so clothes didn't fit over them very well, and she is so skinny that she leaked out of pretty much every pocket diaper I ever put her in
I never tried Sunbabies, but Alva and Kawaii are similiar (all are referred to as the china cheapies) and I have some Kawaii though they didn't fit my LO well.

You won't have to worry about poop if LO is breastfed until LO is on solids, but if LO is FF and once on solids you can use a liner or get a diaper sprayer to get the poop off

I used disposables for out and about as I didn't want to deal with the inconvenience of carting around cloth diapers

How many diapers you need depends on how often you plan to do laundry. I think once I started using my cloth (DD was around 10lb) I was going through 2-3 fitteds at night and 6-8 pockets during the day so 20 diapers had me washing every 2 days

I'm on a break from cloth right now as I've been dealing with some PPD issues and I needed to take some stuff off my plate, but I'm hoping that once we get back into it some of the other diapers I have will fit her better now that she's bigger!

Yeah, well actually I have found that the all in ones and pockets are more expensive than shells. The shells at the local stores range from 10 to 15 dollars, with prefolds being around 3. Yeah, you reuse the shells and put in different prefolds, which is why you need around 24 prefolds, but only like 4 or 5 shells.

Course it really depends on whether you are looking for convenience (all in ones) or saving money (prefolds and shells). Pockets, for me, help at night (the prefolds don't really cut it for my LO.. what a pee monster!) but they aren't really terribly convenient, since you have to stuff them, or very cheap. However they do dry faster than the all in ones.

Also if you have a water conserving washer then you have to make sure you can wash them well, but you can check with whoever you buy them from for that. If you have other questions about washing, look on the various threads on the natural parenting board. (or you can ask me, but I may or may not know!!)

All of them vary in price and convenience, even down to velcro vs snap. I love snap ones, because the poop doesn't get stuck in the velcro. This always happens to my Grovia shells, and my one BumGenius all in one velcro. Also I have been told that as they grow older, the babies tend to try to take the diapers off and snaps are harder, but this is my first and haven't had to go through that yet.

I also plan on doing the flushable liners when she starts solids.

Good luck. I think if they weren't as cute I might not do it, but I have found that cloth was a lot easier than I thought, and I was really overwhelmed at first. It seemed like there were so many options, and I have tried them all. Everyone is a little different, so I'm sure that you will find whatever style fits you the best, and in the end no matter what you go with it will save you money.

Yes we use cloth and love it!

DD1 who is potty training partly at the mo, is in mainly AIOs and pockets. DD2 who is 2 weeks old is in mostly fitteds and wraps (shells) as she is exclusively BF and these contain poo well. I also got a good deal on fitteds and wanted to increase my stash cheaply when I found I was expceting again. I take cloth for out and about and I take cloth to DD1's nursery (day care) too and they have had no problems with them.

Natural parenting section, as others have said, is best place for info.

We use cloth and are very happy, it's very easy once get started. We use Tots Bots easyfits, Bumgenius, Thirsties and many more love them all. I also would advice to try them first, because some nappies may not work for your LO.

Also dealing with poop should be no different, if you look on packet of disposables it says that solids should be removed before binning it.

I cloth nappy. I use a few different types which were given to me. I use Mother Ease nappies and also the Bambino nappies which are really absorbent.
