Also posted in 3rd tri but thought I'd post it here

I was 40+13 on 10th Jan and went for induction (originally due 28th Dec). I had a pessary inserted at 1pm on Tues and was told I'd need to stay for 24 hrs. Nothing much happened from then on. Slight tightenings, bit of bloody show. I was very disappointed and resigned myself to another pessary the next day. I was put on a fetal monitor around 8.30am and the MW was a bit concerned as baby just kept sleeping and not really waking. I was kept on the monitor until about 10.30 when a consultant decided to do the internal early (rather than 1pm). She said I was 2cm and stretchy and I was taken to labour ward and has my waters broken at 12.30. There was meconium in it so I would have to stay on a monitor throughout the whole labour. They didn't seem that worried about the meconium but his monitor did showhe was just sleeping all the time. However, breaking his waters woke him up and everyone seemed happier after that. They said, he's not showing a perfect pattern but we're not too worried.

I was started on the oxytocin drip about 12.45/1pm. I don't know what I was expecting to happen, instanteous pushing I suppose - I'm not sure really! And then the contractions began. Quite mildish but certainly noticeable! The worst thing about it alll for me was being hooked up to so many wires! I had the IV drip and the fetal monitor.

The contractions got stronger and I started using my friends TENS machine which reeally helped, if nothing else than it was a distraction. All my contractions were right down in my vagina rather than back or tummy. I can't remeber what time I started on the gas and air but it did really help. And I went loopy and got the giggles - totally felt like I was drunk! I've now lost track of time but I was getting pretty painful contractions now - they had to turn the drip up and down as they were coming on top of one another, with no real gap. I was going a bit delirious! I kept throwing up and was convinced I could hear my mother and MIL in the corridor. At some point they swapped the fetal monitor for one that attaches to his head as his trace kept disappearing. They were having problems tracking the contractions too with the monitor thing.

I was examind at 7pm and was told I was 3cm but fully thinned out. I knew I had a hell of a long way to go and was sooooo tired so decided to go for the epidural.

Had the epi around 8.15 to 8.30. I don't really know if it helped, the contractions lessened but in the meantime they'd become more concerned about baby's heartbeat. The consultant came in, and at 9pm decided I'd need an EMCS due to fetal distress. They threw scrubs at my OH who I don't think had grasped the emergency (neither had I as everyone was so calm!) I was wheeled into surgery and because I'd just only had the epi fitted they didn't know if it would take effect in time and there was a chance they'd give me a general anaesthetic (sp?). It seemed to work so they topped it up and whipped me into theatre.

Our darling Cormac was born at 9.29pm on 11/01/2012 and weighed 8lb 7.5oz.

He's had problems latching on and feeding as he has mucus in his tummy but we're perserving and getting so much help.
