Does anyone know why they say that babies should sleep with their feet against the end of th cot? Is it just because they might slip under the blanket and suffocate? Would this therefore not be the case with a sleeping bag? We elevate the head end and LO slips down sometimes and ends up with her legs bent at the end, if she was slightly further up this would not happen, but I am not taking any risks. She sleeps only in a grobag with no blankets. Could I put her to sleep a bit further up the cot without there being an increased risk?

as long as there is no blankets for her to slip underneath then i cant see it mattering where in the cot shes placed.
Thats why everyone raves about the gro bags cos then theres no danger of suffocating under blankets

I had this same issue to begin with as we had LO's moses basket elevated because she was a bit congested.. She always had her poor little legs bunched up at the bottom!

She is now in her big cot in her grobag and she is in the middle of the cot. The 'feet to foot' thing doesn't apply in a sleeping bag (as long as it fits properly).

She's much happier!

 Yeah thats why they advise to put babies feet at the bottom of the cot! we use a sleeping bag with no blankets and he sleeps in the middle normaly but do what you feel right :flower:

we use a sleeping bag and she sleeps in the middle. Although she does wriggle about now and ends up anywhere!

We have a 'safa sleeper' :)

Yep, as others have said its to do with the blankets, so not an issue in a grobag :) we wouldn't be without our grobags!

My midwife told me it was recommended to help against SIDS. Something about if LOs fall into a deep sleep they can sometimes forget they're not still in utero. Being able to feel the cot against their feet keeps them aware that they're out in the world and that they need to breathe.

wow! that scares me a bit...i wonder how long you have to worry about soemthing like that? my LO pushes herself with her legs and ends up almsot to the other end of her crib lol.....i guess she must know she's breathing and all, but that still worried me a bit.

is that why they like sleeping on us? cause they can feel us?

But then, they can hear our heart like they can inside, and might forget...

At my post natal class they actually told us not to let the baby sleep on us as hearing the heartbeat could send them into a deep sleep and then they forget to breathe so it increases the risk of SIDS for that reason. Maybe I will leave her foot to foot in that case and just elevate the mattress a bit less so she doesn't slip down. Thanks everyone :)

I start my baby at the head of her crib (cot) as she scoots down to the bottom throughout the night. When I start her out at the bottom she spends the night hitting her feet on the crib and waking her herself up enough to be wide awake and then has a hard time getting back to sleep. She is in a swaddle sleepbag and I have a angelcare breathing monitor & I feel comfortable not having her foot to feet.
