I was at the hospital today and there was a little boy there, his Mum was calling him Couscous. Later a doctor came out of the room and said hello couscous. I've never heard it used as a name before and wondered if it is or likely a nickname.

I imagine its most likely a name as doctors wouldn't call kids normally by a nickname as its unprofessional.

Weird and unusual choice of name though...

That's what I thought, I thought it was a nickname when Mum was using it but when the ob used it, I wasn't so sure.

Oh crickey! I've not heard of Couscous as a name before! Was the child a patient? If so it might have been a nickname, I was in hospital for a while as a child and everyone knew me by my nickname including the doctors. In fact when I got admitted to hospital in early pregnancy with my DS the ward sister called me by that nickname, I was so confused about how she knew it, and she said it was on my notes as the name I prefer to be known by (from when I was 4).
What nationality were the family? I have known a few young people with unusual (to a British person) names- Legolass and Chlorophyll spring to mind- whocame from different countries and selected English names they liked the sound of, without really knowing what the words meant.

Perhaps its a name from their culture? Maybe it's not spelt Couscous?

Perhaps it was a special case so the staff nicknamed him Couscous?

Hahaha, how funny that they were using your nickname. Lucky Kaysie wasn't admitted as a four year old as she refused to be called anything but rainbow, imagine her face as a 20/30/40 something year old having her baby and being called rainbow

It was Mum who was the patient. She was either British or had been in the UK for a long time (neither she or LO had a detectable accent).

I've not heard it before either, so unusual.

Maybe stiletto. I didn't mean this thread to offend, I was simply wondering as I'd never heard it used as a name or nickname before, even googled before I wrote this!

It could have been eastern european, something like Kuskas or something? But LOL, imagine if it was couscous!

I think pp might be right, it does sound rather eastern european.
I once heard a woman call her daugher 'Champagne' and thought I'd probably misheard but then heard her say it several times after.

Spelt like that is slightly off but then again I met a girl who was undecided on the name of her baby but while we was in the hospital waiting for an app she saw a sign and the perfect name just came to her 'placenta' eek.
