Hey guys, I have a friend who isn't on this board but she's freaking out.
She's 6 weeks pregnant and found out she has an 11cm cyst on one of her ovaries.
Is this dangerous?
Has anyone had one like this and had everything be ok?

Thanks for all your help gals, its something I dont' know much about but I want to reassure her!

Hello ladies, this is my very first post:)
I was prego a month and a half ago, went to er with terrible pain, tmi but it felt like bm,then turned into a reeally bad gas feeling, these are warning signs to watch for. The pain was from a very large cyst that had ruptured.i was sent home with threaten m/c,turned into silent mc. Cysts can be dangerous but many woman have them with no prob durin preg. They may have to remove it,but usually only during sec trimester. Im now prego again! And have one still on left ovary.hopin this one sticks! Good luck hope this helps a lil bit:)

During my last pregnancy I was diagnosed with a dermoid cyst which measured 9cm x 9cm x 12 cm. It didn't cause any problems during my pregnancy, but did cause some tenderness when the doc would push on that side of my lower abdomen... Generally, they will just leave the cyst there and deal with it after delivery, because in the majority of women large cysts will cause no problems and the risk of surgery is greater then the risk of leaving it. In some cases the cyst will spontaneously decrease in size and go away... Other times it doesn't as in my case... I ended up having the cyst removed 6 months postpartum.

There is however a small risk that the cyst will rupture or will cause ovarian torsion. Ovarian torsion is the biggest concern and can cause internal bleeeding and death if not treated promptly so it's important that you're friend know that if all of a sudden she experiences severe constant pain (and it's the type of pain that you KNOW that something is terribly wrong) at the site of the cyst she should get help immediately... But again, most women continue on with their pregnancies without that happening.

as usual Kandy, reassuring and informative! :hugs:

LOL yep..,.... I purposely grow benign tumours all over my body so that I can learn and educate others  Soon I have no doubt I'll be sharing my bartholin cyst story....

Thanks for posting this Lisa. I am a bit worried myself as I had a 4 cm cyst detected when I had my MC and they decided just to take a wait and see approach with another ultrasound in Oct. Now I am pg and I wonder what impact it might have. 4cm is not that big, so as long as it is not growing I hope it will be ok. About 8 years ago I lost one of my ovaries because of a much larger cyst that had to be removed. FX!

4cm is still on the small side and most doctors won't even consider removing it until it's over 5cm and has stayed at least that size for awhile. Do you know what type of cyst it is.... Corpus luteum cysts are much more likely to go away then Dermoids.

Currently I have a 4cm corpus luteum cyst on my left ovary, not really concerned about it at all as it's only 1/3 the size of my last cyst and it's just a corpus luteum one (very very common)....

Dermoids can also go away on their own if they're small enough (that's what I had last time) but they're kinda gross as they're made up of hair and teeth and fat and

Thanks Kandy. Unfortunately they were not able to tell me much about the cyst other than that it was fluid filled, the size and that it didn't seem to be directly attached to my ovary, but just in the adnexa area. I am not sure what that is about! I am seeing my Dr. on Tues and I assume I will still go for an ultrasound in early Oct to check it out (with the added bonus of checking out the embryo too I guess!).

How can you help to rid the cyst or make it shrink??.If its clear fluid filled..Do you not lay on that side its on?

I think they often shrink or disappear on their own. Honestly I can't feel it at all. I would never have know it was there if it was not for the ultrasound.

could a large one cause a miscarriage? Is there cites on it with pregnancy?

Pregnancy does increase the risk of ovarian torsion or rupture, but the risk is still rather small especially if it's just a small cyst....

And I don't know of anything to help make them go away.....

And I have no clue what the cyst could be attached to if it's not directly attached to the ovary or what the management of that would be.

What happens if they rupture? i read you bleed.. How would the surgery be?

If they rupture it will hurt a hell of a lot and may bleed... The bleeding varies from extremely severe to very mild and may or may not be external. So you can be bleeding internally and not even realize it other then the severe pain.

Management varies depending on the situation.... If the rupture occurs and the bleeding is minimal and the woman's vital signs remain normal then they'll just do an expectant management approach and will just let things heal on their own. In cases where bleeding is severe and the woman's vitals are compromised they'd do surgery immediately. They'd have to put you under GA for the surgery.
