I know this is a little early, but daycare spots are full here so if I want to get Alessa into a daycare for when I go back to work next April I need to actually look soon.

My question is that since Alessa will only need childcare for 3 hours a day from Monday-Thursday whether it would be worth it to pay for a daycare or whether I should look into a nanny?

Do daycare's do hourly rates?

I work days Mon-Fri 8 am-430 PM and my husband works evenings Sun-Thurs from 3 PM-1130 PM. So basically, from Mon-Thurs we just need childcare from around 2 PM-5 PM. On Fridays my husband would be home with her and on Sundays I would be home with her.

Most nurseries do either all day or a morning session and afternoon session so you could send her say from 1-5pm on the days you need to. I don't think nurseries do daily rates (none of the ones where I am do, at least but things may be different in Canada).

I'm currently looking in to my options and am not very impressed with any of the nurseries near me so am looking into child-minders/nannies. Why don't you go and look round some nurseries and 'interview' some nannies? Ask lots of questions and have a good nosey about until you find somewhere/someone that feels 'right' for you and your baby.

Good luck!

Yes, nurseries do morning, afternoon or whole day sessions. I think kids really benefit from a nursery environment - it will make the transition to primary school much easier for them.

At a nursery they're more than likely going to have access to experiences that you wouldn't necessarily have in a home environment - messy painting, sandpits, learning to share with other children etc. I also think it's good that they are exposed to all the germs.

Also, if a childminder/babysitter were to be ill, you or your OH would have to take time off work. At a nursery, there's always plenty of staff to cover, so the only time you'd have to take time off is if your child was too ill to attend. x

You'd also have to have your holidays at the same time as your childminder/nanny or at least arrange for separate cover during this time. x

I have looked into a Nanny as I have 3 LO's and wondered if it would be cheaper than childminders and after school clubs and tbh they are more expensive plus you have to do their tax etc so more hassle, saying that they do get one to one relationship that way. Not certain if a Nanny would do a couple of hours a week though. I have a childminder who 2nd LO is going to as well in Sept and she is fantastic, I have only had one bad experience with a childminder (sat my LO in front of TV all day every day grr) and due to moving several times have had a few. From experience I have found those who are older and have grown up children to be the best, I had 2 like this and they were both amazing and did a fab job of being like a 2nd mummy - that is just what I found though.

With holidays etc a lot of childminders are friends with others and usually will cover for eachother so you don't necessarily have to take holidy at the same time however most will not charge if they are on hols so we tend to take ours same time mostly as it's a little cheaper.

If you have any questions re my childminder experiences etc , feel free to PM
Good luck with whatever you decide, it's so hard deciding what to do for best all round x

I have a housekeeper who worked as a nanny & Omar really loves her. She's been with us for more than one year, but I still can't leave Omar with her. I'm planning to go back to work next month (3-4 hrs), & I'd prefer to put him in a nursery as he'd interact with other kids. I didnt decide yet.

I am going to put LO to nursery three times per week. I took her today for a test session and she loved being around other babies, I could see the excitement in her eyes.

If I could afford a good nanny that would be my preference though.

I REALLY wanted Ferryn to go to nursery but all of the ones around us are about £900 per month for 3 days a week. We can't afford that and my whole salary would just be to cover childcare! So now I'm looking into childminders
