Hey :D

So, seriously, i cannot believe this is up for debate at all, but it is....i was over at OH's parents house last night to spend time w him and come dinner time, they had canned ham and mashed potatoes etc and, i commented that my doctor did mention do not have processed meats, deli meats etc....and his dad was all bull shit! and OH was all, its true her doctor said she couldn't, and he's all Bull shit again like not remotely buying it....um, i've had their canned ham before....its not like i make up some fake reason everytime....and its not even like his dad spent hours slaving over a stove curing it and cooking it....so why be offended? It drives me mad cause his parents at times seem to get offended over the smallest things that the other party is not remotely trying to do , and it is frustrating....i could tell his dad was butthurt i didn't eat the ham and was bent the wrong way, he even forwarded a freakin email w facts saying only deli meats are not ok and etc meaning he was right and he had to go as far as stewing about it from last night's dinner till today now, and forwarding OH the facts whilst he is at work! :O the heck?! i of course got annoyed maybe hormonal but i fought back and found a article saying canned ham and etc are not recommended as much to have it....

I need everyones opinions, are processed meats / canned meats such as ham alright to have during pregnancy?? i just am asking for my own self and not to really battle on more w his dad apparently.... UGH...

Well its not going to do you any harm, but processed foods like that arent exactley healthy in a normal diet let alone during pregnancy

Processed meats have a listeria risk. It's pretty remote, but if you get it its bad.

They also contain nitrates & nitrites, which are carcinogens--not a good idea anyway, but esp when you are preggy.

they say not to eat deli meats because the risk of bacteria is higher.

I agree, I think it falls under the banner of possible Listeria carrier.

I think it is very unfair of him to not respect your choices. I find it astounding that people get so opinionated about what choices you make about what food/drink you will/will not have when you are pregnant. At the end of the day we are the ones that are looking after the little baby right now and if we don't think it is appropriate/a good idea to eat/drink specific things, then i really think people should accept that and not force their opinions on us. I think everyone has come across this to some extent - I certainly have.

Hugs

Like everyone else is saying,
Processed meats pose a listeria risk...which is still pretty rare.
The risk goes down dramatically if you heat it.
So really, on occasion eating the meat is fine.

BUT... that still does not excuse your OH's dad for acting that way.
You have the right to eat what you want to and vice versa.
Tell him to back off or else you won't come over and eat anymore period.
I straight up tell my parents or inlaws if they are making a dinner I don't like...you just gotta deal with it, you can't just get butthurt over every little thing that is said.

:hugs:

and by you, I mean your OH's father....
sorry if that was confusing.

In the UK we are told it is OK to eat those foods which is different advice to in the USA, however it's your choice what you eat and nobody should pressure you to eat something you are not comfortable with.

Parents can be super annoying sometimes, especially when they are the OH's! But, I guess it's one of those things...
Anyways hun, try not to let it bother ya too much.
As for eating deli meat, processed meat, etc. Look, I've been to Subway a couple times, at first I freaked out after reading about listeria etc., but people have been doing this for years, I highly doubt if a bologna sandwich is going to hurt my baby...sorry if I offended anyone here. Anyways, your OH's parents are old school, back when they were making babies, there wasn't all this hype on what to eat, what not to eat, etc. I guess they thought it to be ridiculous about the ham, but what they don't know is all the risks now associated with pregnancies and what is supposedly right and wrong. Try not to let it get to you, just do what YOU think is right and everything will turn out okay. xxx

BUt if you cook it through properly, there is ABSOLUTLY know problem at all, any bugs are killed...

What a very strange reaction! Why on earth would he take it so personally?

I don't eat any processed meat right now, heated or not, it any amount. As others said, it's firstly the risk of listeria (risk of serious illness), and secondly the risk of nitrates (potential carcinogens that have been linked to childhood leukemia when eaten during pregnancy).

And uh...canned ham isn't exactly on my list of things that tempt me to fall off the wagon on this!

Urgh, the thought of canned ham makes my stomach roll..

I wouldn't eat that even if I wasn't pregnant :haha:

& I second what mislaww says, the carcinogens is enough to keep me away from lunch meat and the like.. mostly ;) I've slipped up twice in 20 weeks and had a turkey sandwich, one of those times I heated till steaming first so it's not as bad.

Yeah...I was thinking the same thing, canned meat of any kind is usually not so tempting. God I'm glad I haven't had a Spam craving, I'll stick with my hamburger and taco cravings :)

He definitely over reacted, you have the right to make decisions for you and your baby as you see fit.

but canned ham? I have never heard of it before... off to google..

I shouldn't misrepresent...I may have been too lazy to pick out bacon bits from my perogies one day... mmmm...bacon. Now there's a food product.

Oh my :dohh:

Bacon is on my ' the only way i would eat this is if I was trapped on an island, starving.. and I didn't have any luck catching fish by hand or finding small animals to skin and cook ' list... yeah, I hate it that much :haha:

Sausage on the other hand, I'm guilty of eating a McGriddle every now and again. My stomach is now growling.

Bacon... as awful as it is...

<3 <-- its on that list

But only with breakfast cooked very crispy. Or sauteed if I need it in cooking. Yum.

BellaBlu, darling you know I love you but you should have yourself checked out. There must be something wrong with you. Although agreed on sausage....mmmm...

Really, any non-canned pork product. Mmmm...pork....
