DH's Granddad terminal cancer.

We found out before christmas that DH's Paternal Granddads cancer had returned for the 4th time in his lung this time. He wasn't told much about it until yesterday when he went and they've said that there is nothing they can do since he's had so much chemo in the past. He's been given less than a year. Does anyone know what 'less than a year' actually means? Does it mean near a year or a alot less? We'd be devastated if he never met his great grandchild.
