Hello All,

I am new to this website as well as being a mother. I recently found out I was pregnant. A week later I begin to bleed and the bloods is bright red and some clots. I'm also having mild cramping. I ended up goin to the emergency room and after 10 long hours (blood work, pelvic exam, ultra sound, and transvaginal ultrasound), the PA tells me that I have a miscarriage in progress. He said that the location of the sac increased my chances of having a miscarriage. I was devastated I automatically assumed that it wouldn't be long before I had a complete miscarriage. Well as soon as I got home I began searching the internet and I found out that a threatening miscarriage doesn't necessarily mean that I will have a miscarriage. So I saw my ob/gyn today and whoa was this a breath a fresh air. She confirmed that I hadn't had a miscarriage and my cervix is still closed which is all positive news. So we still having a chance of having a baby. I will return to my ob/gyn on thursday to do another HCG

Has anyone experienced this diagnosis and if so what should I do as far as taking care of myself and the baby. I know that taking it easy, bed rest and pelvic rest are recommended.

I know the diagnosis is often given for insurance purposes... just as a reason for the visit.... not necessarily a true diagnosis of what is happening... just their medical reason for seeing you. (I've heard of this being on the ultrasound report for women who got early scans even though nothing was wrong)

I've seen so many discussions on this board where there was red bleeding, even with clots and everything was fine. Mild cramping is normal for early pregnancy, its heavy cramping and heavy bleeding that is a true sign of miscarriage.

You've done the right thing with the doctor and HCG levels.. seeing them go up and getting another scan in a week or so will be so reassuring.
Its definitely NOT over until its over, you know?

Good luck, keep us posted, and welcome to this site, the ladies here are wonderful and so supportive!

"threatened miscarriage" is the term they use if a woman experiences any spotting or bleeding in pregnancy... Approximately, 1/4 women experience some bleeding in pregnancy and only 1/2 of those will go on to miscarry... So there is definitly definitly hope!

There's tons and tons and tons of spotters/bleeders on this board! I'm one of them... been spotting for 6 weeks now... Just gotta take what life throws at ya and pray for the best.

Yes, please do not let the term scare you! I was labeled as a 'threatened m/c' when I had early scans due to spotting. Like lisaf said my doctor told me it was what they have to say for insurance to approve the tests and scans. I sadly did end up with a m/c at that time, but there are plenty of women who don't! Don't get discouraged by what they ER said. I am guessing since you said you just found out your pg, that it is way to early for them to make assumptions like that!!!! Stay positive hun, I hope it all works out! :)

Didn't want to read and run hon, but I really don't have an answer for you. So sorry you're going through this.

I was diagnosed with a threatened miscarriage, but at 11 weeks - everything looks okay on an ultrasound so far. But I don't know anything about the position of you little bean...

Good luck...

Sorry you are going through this. I was also diagnosed with threatened miscarriage in October 2009 at 6+5 weeks (I did not miscarry, I had the baby in June 2010). I was also told by the emergency room doctors to prepare to miscarry and "oh don't worry, it's so common to lose the baby in the beginning" <-- yeah, that really felt nice. Truth is that threatened miscarriage is a 50/50 chance, so I suppose they prepare you for the worst. That being said, nothing you can do will really help or prevent at this time aside from taking it easy so just think positive. Thinking positive is really the only thing that got me through it, but it is such a horrid feeling not knowing what is going to happen.

I am new to the forum. I am pregnant, I am not a first time mom. I found out I was pregnant 8/28 got a positive on a home test. Went to my doctor Sept 1 and did pg test and got positive. Dr also did a hormone test as well. Came back fine. 9/11 went to the emergency room due to bleeding like a period. I got told that I had a threatened miscarriage. Er Dr did an U/s and found baby and heart beat both looked good. Call Ob dr on monday to find out what he wanted to do. Told me to wait until my appointment and rest as much as possible. Had dr appt yesterday, found out baby is no longer living, I should be 8 weeks pg, baby stopped developing 6 weeks 2 days, no heart beat. Now I am waiting to miscarry. I got told I could do a D&C, Natural or take medication. I am told to call doctor tomorrow. Although I have not had a miscarriage, I have no idea what to expect. I am thinking I am going to do the medicine, if the body does not expell it on it's own.
For others whom have been told that they have a threatened miscarriage. I will be praying for you. Stay positive and rest..
