How much caffeine is in a standard can of diet coke? I don't like coffee so before pregnancy I drank red bull in a morning to pick me up a bit, but I know red bull is not suitable for pregnant woman so I've swapped it for a can of diet coke, but how much caffeine is in it? I know we're allowed 200mg a day, right?

Thanks ladies! :)

I thought 40mg so roughly the same. I try to only have one, sometimes two cans a day x

Thanks ladies, I'm also going to try to stick to one a day...two maximum. I have a thing for apple juice at the moment and I'm sure that's zero caffeine :)

Please make sure you know the risks associated with diet soda. Aspartame is in it which has been linked to premature death especially in women. Aspartame can poison the body and cause severe issues and also can cause neurological issues. Regular soda does not have the same risks.

It is not widely know but google can show you the articles.

Ok I shall bring this up with my midwife, never heard this before and drank the stuff throughout my pregnancy with my daughter.

There is a lot the food industry and FDA don't want you to know.

Well if this is the case then I'm sure my midwife will know this. So I shall bring it up with her, like I say I've never heard it before.

Yes I have heard the sweeteners in diet coke are very bad for you. I've heard they've been linked to leukaemia in babies, and that you're honestly better off drinking full fat coke in pregnancy.

I'd not panic though as the amount you're drinking is fairly small!

Has anyone got the link to this? I'm googling but not finding much.

Many had switched from sugary drinks to those with artificial sweeteners believing they were a healthier option. But the study suggests that drinks using sweeteners, such as aspartame, carried dangers for the unborn child.

If a pregnant mother uses aspartame and the baby survives the child can grow up to cancer. Neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D, author of: "Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills", and DVD: "The Truth About Aspartame" www.atavistik.com evaluated the Ramazzini studies: "My review of the first Ramazzini Study concluded that the study was one of the best designed, comprehensive and conclusive studies done to date on the multipotential carcinogenic danger of aspartame. This second study is even more conclusive, in that it shows a dose-dependent statistically significant increase in lymphomas/leukemia in both male and female rats exposed to aspartame. These two cancers are the fastest growing cancers in people under age 30.
Some British public health experts are now advising expectant mothers to avoid food and drink containing the chemicals.
It is rare for a mother-to-be to give birth before 37 weeks of a normal pregnancy.
But the EU research suggests this low risk was increased by 38 per cent if the woman was drinking, on average, one can of diet drink a day.
Routinely drinking four or more cans a day could increase the risk by as much as 78 per cent.

My goodness I never new this! Definitely sticking to normal coke then.

This exactly.

I was told to avoid all artificial sweeteners as there just isnt enough research on them, but I could have stevia in limited quanitities but absolutely no apartame/splenda/sweet n low/etc.

It's strangely not very well known. You think they'd tell people but then it would affect sales of course.

Good to hear you've chosen to avoid it - it's not exactly a big sacrifice I don't think. (Well I think diet coke is absolutely disgusting so I never drink it anyway so no sacrifice at all for me haha!)

Full fat coke all the way! Infact I've always been addicted to it (bad I know! Haha) ... Have limited myself to a can... Or two.. A day... Trying to sometimes not have any! I only drink coke and loads of water! My body and my teeth must love me..

You can get caffeine free diet coke but can you also get caffeine free full fat coke? I'm avoiding all fizzy drinks at the mo due to indigestion but I'm hoping this will pass and I do like coke! x

My thoughts exactly! Aspartame is sooooo bad for you, pregnant or not! If you must drink soda, drink regular soda and limit the quantity so you're limiting your sugar intake.

Even when you're buying other foods/drinks please make sure you check the ingredients to make sure that aspartame is not used. You'd be surprised how many things aspartame is in.

Great, now I'm going to spend the rest of my life worrying that my children are goign to develop cancer since I drank at least 1-2 cans of diet drink every day during my pregnancies. :/

Yes, you can get regular coke caffeine free....it's the only soda I drink.

If you're scared of the risks of aspartame, then you really should be scared of everything else in regular coke. I think it's disingenuous to be alarmist about aspartame (https://www.babycenter.com/404_is-it-safe-to-use-artificial-sweeteners-during-pregnancy_9213.bc - this is a pretty balanced article on the concerns, btw), but act like regular coke is an okay substitute. I admit that I drink diet sodas; it's not for dietary concerns. I just like it. But I don't pretend it's a healthy alternative, and I try to drink as much water as possible. But regular coke is pretty terrible for you too. One shouldn't really be suggested over the other. If you are really concerned, then switch to water and no-sugar-added juices and milk.
