I just read this story this morning and thought I'd pass it along. We use cloth most of the time but I do have some disposables around in LO's room where our dog could get them. I'll be doing some cleaning tonight!

"One more reason to use cloth!!! It has been a rough day here at our house. I have had Grace in disposable diapers the last two days while I did a thorough strip on my cloth. We had a disposable diaper sitting on our night stand in our room and yesterday while we were at work our dog tore it up and digested some of it.

Last night we noticed her bleeding from her mouth and though she bit her tongue. Cleaned her up and it seemed to have stopped. We woke up this morning to find her covered in blood and that she made a mess during the night all over our room. Took her to the vet to find out she did not have any cuts in her mouth. After lab work and an x-ray we discovered that the diaper she had gotten into the day before was expanding in her stomach and intestine and caused a blockage that was causing internal bleeding into her liver and kidneys and she had lost a lot of blood and was very weak.

After discussing her slim chances to being strong enough to have surgery and the slimmer chances of making in through the surgery we had to decide to have her put down this morning. It was a very hard day and not something we thought we would have to do to our dog who was very healthy just yesterday morning!!!! And remember this was not a dirty diaper that was left out. A clean diaper on the nightstand.

How many of us keep diapers there for during the night. Or in a diaper bag or diaper stacker etc where our pets could easily get to them! I always knew the chemicals in disposable diapers and chose cloth for this reason but never imagined the chemicals in one would kill my dog! Ugh time to head to bed. It has been a long stressful day."

-disclaimer: what is in quotes was pulled from the original story and not my words. I do not intend to start any argument about type of diaper used etc. just want to help make sure this doesn't happen to anyone on here.

Aw we have two retrievers and seeing this made me sad....thanks for this, i never even thought about it! Xx

poor wee dog. so easily done. im going to make a big effort to ensure my gsd cant get to any nappys x

One thing I didn't think of is I have a couple in her diaper bag that I keep on the floor in her room. Our dog is always sniffing around in there!

This has never even crossed my mind. Our Yorkie is very very picky about food though and only eats when my DH hand feeds him :dohh: so hopefully he won't go around eating nappies. I guess better safe than sorry, will be careful not to leave any lying around

My dog eats EVERYTHING! Recently she's eaten 3 DVDs, the telephone cord, my DH's glasses and the living room curtains. :dohh:

I'm definitely going to keep LOs nappies well away from her!

My dog eats everything too!

I had left a bag with some dirty nappys on the floor in LO's room whilst I bathed him and came back in to find the dog with her noise in the dirty nappy ripping the nappy up!

It was a right mess!

I don't think she ate anything, other than poo, she has been ok since but I make sure I move nappys straight away now or keep them out of her reach.

Its good to post these things. So many people don't know what can hurt a dog! Gum being one of the worst and so many people give their dogs grapes. My own dog would be the FIRST to snack on a gourmet poop diaper. He does not chew anything up, not even his own toys, but if there are bodily fluids on it... omg he loves it. I have to make sure babies room is always shut!

I'm so sorry for your loss :(
Thanks for sharing I hope this prevents this horrible tragedy from happening to another beloved pet. I'm a veterinary nurse and thankfully haven't come across this before.
Once again I'm so sorry sending hugs :(

After seeing them swell when I accidently put them in the wash in past with clothes yeah they can do this :( and after seeing what the chemicals done to my babies bum I went to cloth.

After you mentioned them swelling in the wash Dragonfly, I was thinking I bet disposable nursing pads would do the same! I have those under my bed for storage since I don't use them anymore. I'll have to clean those tonight too!

Btw, thanks for all the sentiments, I just want to reassure you guys, this didn't happen to me, luckily. I read about it on Facebook. The person that this happened to is a cloth diaper retailer here in the states.

yep they would and also sponge, thats why you never let dogs at sofas keep the sponge away from them as it will swell in their stomachs and if you dont get to vet in time, which is an op its deadly and cotton wool to keep that away. You should see the size a normal nappy can swell to also :( they really do hold a lot of water. (going by my wash that is).

I am probably one of the last women in the world using sanitary pads instead of tampons, but dogs will eat those too and they can cause similar problems.

Our dog ate most of a maxi pad once and became quite ill. We were lucky that he threw it up before it became lodged in the intestine. Our vet had us watching him making sure he pooped properly over the next few days.

Makes me miss our dog! He passed away on December 23rd. Not from eating anything strange. So lonesome without that big bark letting me know when the mail gets here every day!

Wow, that horrible and scary!! Babies eat things they shouldn't as well! So be even more careful with your babies
