pay back my SMP to the company i work for if i decide not to go back to work for them?

While being pregnant i graduated as a teacher, so would love to not have to go back to my job and instead get a teaching job (pref part time). However my manager has made it clear that she believes i will have to pay back my statutory maternity pay. Is she right? I thought the company get the money from the Govt to pay my maternity pay

Must mention is a national company, so not as though im putting a family run business out of pocket

You do not have to pay back SMP. The only way the company can make you pay back any money is if they have paid you company maternity pay which is over the SMP amount.

Thanks.

This is what i thought, however my manager always knows best, shes a bit like my mum haha. Really cant wait to hand in my notice :)

And its definately SMP, i just say get enough to live off.

Your from darlington...im from Spennymoor, not too far away

Tell me about it - this month was the first month I got the £125 a week or whatever it is and I wanted to cry when I saw my payslip.

Nope don't have to pay SMP back. Does it stand for 'stupid maternity peanuts'?!!!

Nope I was under that impression aswell and phoned up Human resources and they said no I don't have to pay it back!! Try phoning your HR department just to clarify things with them!!!!x
