Do you apply sudacrem/barrier cream as standard every nappy change?

I only use it if Adams bum's red, I've been told that it can affect absorbancy of the nappy and may make problems worse as the wee dosn't seep into the nappy.

lots of people i know seem to plaster their lo's bits with sudocreme at every change, i think we've only used it about 2-3 times when he had a bit of a sore bum early on, havent used it since. we do occasionally put a bit of calendula cream on if its looking a bit red. I dont think its necessary (unless red/sore), and as someone said it can dry out the skin and smother it. So ignore them or act surprised that they use it every time lol!

No I don't as when I was trained as a nanny and when working as a nanny during my uni years, it was always taught and in my experience seemed to follow through, that barrier cream = liquid runs off = problems elsewhere. Rashes can appear down the legs. The cream rubs off onto the nappy and compromised its absorbancy.

I only use a rash cream if there is a problem and thankfully so far there have been none.

This is what my HV told me...I was putting it on every time at the start, but apparently one of the big nappy companies [forget which one] were doing tests and found that it clogged the nappy up, stops it absorbing properly as you said and this can actually CAUSE nappy rash.

No, I don't put anything on her bum. Her skin needs to breathe, and as long as her nappy is being changed frequently there is no problem.

If she ever does get a little bit red (when she has runny poos or is a bit poorly) I use Neals Yard baby barrier cream - and it's amazing. So amazing, I actually use it on my skin!!

Holly is 11 months today and has had nappy rash 4 times - once was very bad when she was 3 months old (equivalent to 3rd degree burns according to doc), the three other times have just been a little teeny bit of redness which was gone by the next day.

The skin is an amazing organ and I think we are too keen to slather stuff on it at every opportunity - as long as you keep it clean, dry and hydrated, most of the time it can do its job all by itself!

I put some bepanthen on Eloises bum after her bath at night as she then goes a while without a nappy change as she's sleeping through. I don't apply it any other time unless her bum is looking a bit red.

I'm the same I do it after baths, not everytime though

only if he has a sore bum after a runny poo. regularly as he is teething and his poo is mega runny!!

I've heard that you shouldn't apply sudocream everytime because it is medication and its effectiveness will decrease. The barrier creams are fine.
I don't think that you should need to use it all the time. It would be better to have more nappy free time or consider a different nappy.

We do it every change just because I think prevention is better than cure. Touch wood she hasn't had nappy rash yet.

I use bepanthen twice a day, morning and night. The hv said not to use it at every change (like I did at first) because then if she does get a sore bum we've got nowhere else to go with it.

I apply it everytime, but I make an effort to make diaper changes "play time" so she can lay there without her diaper on and dry out before I apply any ointment. At nighttime though I layer it on kinda thick but in the day time I apply just a thin, barely there covering...Once she's a lil bigger I don't think I'll be as anal about it, but I worked in a group home (kind of like a nursing home) and I've seen some of them get horrible rashes and I cannot imagine my cute lil baby girl with 10 times more sensitive skin getting one like that...and so far, no redness, no rashes, no nothing!

Like others have said I only put it on if he looks a little red. I think we've maybe put it on twice in the morning after he's gone down a little early.
