Nathan had his one year jabs today! He cried when the needle went in, but he was fine afterwards! No grouchiness, no grumping, nothing! I bought calpol at the local shops on the way home, but surprisingly havent had to use it! I usually only give medicine if really needed. Although i know mums who give calpol etc right after the vaccines and every four hours after the vaccines until the next day... What do you do when your child has the vaccines? Medicate or no medicate? xx

I medicate only if they show obvious signs of discomfort/pain. If they are taking it generally well, then no medication. But if they are crying inconsolably, fussing all day, then yes, I give medicine to help relieve the pain.

ETA: I also try not to give anything right away. I wait to see how they are handling it.

During the night is the worst for my two when it comes to vaccines. They usually wake up a few times in the night after their jabs so i usually give them a bit of calpol before bedtime, but havent needed to this time! Im just hoping he has a good sleep and isn't too crabby tomorrow xx

I don't. I would if I had to, if lo was showing signs of fever or pain. But like jd83 I wait until I see a reason.

I wouldn't ever unnecessarily give medication, so would wait it out. My LO had a bit after her first jabs (10weeks) as she reacted badly and we were up at the hospital, the next two sets there was no need.

I've read that it is no longer recommended to give babies medication before or after vaccinations because it is making their immune system less responsive thus causing the vaccinations to be less effective. I don't know if this is true, but it would make sense. I mentioned it to a friend (didn't explain why because I wasn't sure if she'd get it) & when she asked her baby's dr if she should give Tylenol after her vaccinations the doctor said they don't recommend it anymore. He didn't say why though.

I haven't given it to my 5 month old. He usually just sleeps after anyway. But his doctor, who is very old school, has that's it's ok to give it on the paperwork I bring home. I tend to disagree with him a lot though. I did give it to my 4 year old when he was a baby. That was when I believed everything my dr told me & didn't do my own research.

Nope. The fever is a part of the process. If it got really high then I would give her something, but a mild/moderate fever I wouldn't give any. Which means of course that I definitely wouldn't give her anything if she wasn't showing any symptoms at all.

I have done in the past when DS was a little grouchy as it was recommended, they even gave me a prescription for paracetamol as I didn't have any. But after reading this:

https://www.nhs.uk/news/2009/10october/pages/paracetamol-vaccine-injection-research.aspx

I haven't given it to either boy (they both had some this week) because it doesn't look like it's a good idea unless absolutely necessary (I.e. High fever) thankfully they've both been ok so not needed to.

I always knew it was bad to give it before.

Never have bc it hasn't been needed. She's never run any fever or had any other symptoms from her shots.

Only if it's needed. I wouldn't give it right away or every four hours in case it masked any symptoms.

Dd has had 2 sets of vacs so far and has been fine both times so I haven't needed to. If she was in pain or developed a high temperature I would though
