Hi everyone

I am just over 4 weeks. I was told by our FS to continue taking metformin for the whole pregnancy to reduce the risk of gestational diabetese. Unfortunately thanks to genetics the risk is very high.

I will follow what he says, however I was wondering if anyone else stayed on metformin throughout their pregnancy? I've read online and many women are told not t take it during pregnancy?

Just a bit curious as to whether others have taken it and it was all alright.

Thanks

I was prescribed it pre pregnancy with my last. I was told to take it for the first 3 months then stop. However I wasn't prescribed it for any medical issues it was just a sort of experimental thing to use with clomid to see if it would help us get pregnant. Turns out we didn't need it but I continued until 12 weeks at doc suggestion. It never agreed with my system but that could be because I didn't need it. Best of luck!

I was prescribed it a few months ago for insulin resistance, and since I started taking it I've lost weight and my cycles regulated, so it was the metformin that allowed me to get pregnant in the first place. My fertility specialist and endocrinologist have both recommended I stay on it during the pregnancy, although I am going to be monitoring my blood sugar to see if I need to increase the dose or even switch to insulin. My risk of gestational diabetes is pretty high because I wasn't far from type 2 before the metformin anyway.

Some doctors don't agree with continuing to take it, so you really need to discuss your particular situation with your doctors.

Thanks, yea I've read that some doctors don't like u taking it throughout pregnancy but my doctor said I would be on it the whole time.

I was on it the whole time in my last pregnancy. I can't remember why I stayed on, I think it was a personal choice and the Dr was ok with it. Not sure if I will remain on it this pregnancy though.

I took metformin until 13 wks then they put me on glipizide to finish out the pregnancy, they said it wasnt safe in the third trimester or something like that. I started metformin again after I had my son.

Lirpa! This is unrelated to your post (though I will say I know a few other ladies on BnB who were also told by their doctors to stay on the metformin), but I just wanted to say I remember you from the TWW threads and so happy to see you on this part of the forum. Congrats lovely!!

Thanks confuzion! I've finally made it past the TWW! So happy and blessed. Fingers are crossed for a H&H 9 months :)

I had a mild pcos an year ago and my endo knws this so she told me to take lowest dose of metformin to avoid any further gd situation and I m yet to discuss it with my obgyn as I had a glucose tolerance test last month itself and it was negative so I m not going to develop any but just to make sure there is no risk I think lowest dose is ok I'll keep u updated Hun once I meet my ob gyn congrats Hun and I am 7 weeks !!

I have been on metformin since 26 weeks due to Gestational Diabetes (boooo) I have to take it to keep control of my blood sugars. I will be on it until delivery and then monitored again to make sure it hasn't continued after birth. I advise to keep taking it as you would rather have a healthy weight baby

I was on Metformin for 3 months for PCOS, but when I found out I was pregnant ( about 6 weeks I found out) I stopped taking it, because I was afraid of harming the baby. I talked to my doctor and he said he doesn't mind me continuing it since there is no harmful affects, but i personally stopped taking it to be cautious.

I had gd with my last pregnancy so took it during third tri. I also take it due to pcos etc but doc had told me to stop until my gtt in a few weeks. You really need to talk to your doc x

Thanks ladies yea I wouldn't make a medical choice on my own. I listen to the doctor, just wondering if anyone else ever took it while pregnant.

I'm now stopping metformin at the end of the week anyhow. Doctor said to lower the dose and stop taking it.
