Does the month a baby is born effect them in the future?

My sister in law is always going on about how she would never have a child that was born between the months of April-August as she feels they are at a disadvantage when they go to school as they are younger. She is planning to start TTC next year but will only try for 6 months and then stop to ensure that her child will be born between Sep-March.

There was a report on BBC1 recently showing how the month a child is born in can effect how they perform in school/exams. August babies in most cases having the lower results.

I personally believe that any child is a blessing no matter when they are born. I can understand where they are coming from but its not going to stop me trying. But now DH has started on the same thing as his sister keeps going on and on about it and making a real issue as she knows we are trying. (i think she is pushing it because she wants to be the first in the family to have a child) I really don't want to stop trying and i have explain this to DH but i have feeling that this subject is going to come up again.

What does everyone else think?

Actually babies born in November and December are usually younger when they start school (at least that's what I've seen). Summer and spring babies are what the majority of children that are school-aged are. I am a teacher, and I would say that my struggling students are usually born in November or December.....not always, but usually they are the youngest. 90% of the kids I teach are born between March and September.

Hope that this is helpful to you!

a lot of schools now have start times throughout the year, i was exactly the same i started trying in december and thought hmmm dont want a summer baby, but there is no stopping me! im going to have a baby whether they are born sep or july i also read that mandatory school age is 5 i havent looked into much but if anyone out there knows, can you as a parent defer entry until they are 5? i prob got wrong end of stick was only skimming article . . . .

I don't think it matters at all. I know plenty of smart people who were young for their grade in school and plenty of stupid people who were average/old for their grade.

Well I'm not going to stop trying! I was born in April and my sister in August and we both did brill at school (she has two degrees and is a top physio at a London hospital now). Its about how much effort you put into helping your kids learn rather than when they were born I think. And by the age where exams mean anything an age diff of 6 months will mean nothing. Besides birthdays in the sun are much more fun! I'm hoping for a June baby. Give me a :bfp: this month please!

Hey i'm a teacher and any differences you can notice are minimal and only there generally up to year 1 (age 6/7) after that they have caught up. What makes much more of a differene is the support they recieve at home. Some of the most intelligent children i have taught have summer birthdays.

I agree :coffee: At this point for me, any baby any time will work :)

My son was born in May and is exceptionally intelligent. I dont think it makes a huge difference, and as said if they receive good support at home then there is no reason for them to fall behind at school.

Well im a August baby and can honestly say I felt at a disadvantage and feel my children are as I have had sept and july babies but wouldnt let that stop me trying for a baby dependant on what month he/she might be born xx

I'm a summer baby (January birthday - but from Australia so our school year starts at the end of January.

I have no idea how the school system works in Aus though - I just went :)

Oh, and apparently I'm a genius, ROFLMAO :D Does that make me sound obnoxiously boastful?

** edit **
And i would NEVER stop TTC just to guide what time of the year a baby is born. Although I definitely have a preference for somewhere between 1st January to 31st December if that helps.

I am a teacher and agree with HanD, If there are any differences, they are pretty much equalled out by the time they are in Year 1. As she said it is far more dependent on the support they get from home, reading stories together etc.. Dont let it stop you trying!

I'm a July baby and I never felt disadvantaged. In fact, I'm really really hoping for a little June baby!

As I'm 36, I feel I just don't have the luxury of 'picking' the time of year my baby will be born. I can't afford to stop ttc for a few months, can't waste any time.

I was a June baby and never felt disadvantaged because of it. My OH is an August birthday and seems to have turned out just fine too. I've actually always really liked having a birthday in June as its halfway through the year so halfway between Christmases .

If I was going to choose a time I'd probably prefer any child of mine not to be born, it would be around mid-late December, as I always feel a bit sorry for children with birthdays around Christmas as all the emphasis is on Christmas x

I agree. I always felt sorry for Christmas or post-Christmas babies. My sister was one of them and her birthday is always minimal because she's two days after Christmas, when everyone is still all partied out and just spent all their gift money on Christmas. That's definitely a time I'd like to avoid for any baby.

Thank you ladies, I feel better now. Bring on my BFP and a little june baba
x x x

Awwww Crimbo babies lol my nephew is Boxing day baby and he never gets a party :( always has it few weeks before Xmas.

O well.

Back to the topic

Im June born and my brother July..my hubby July and none of us are errrm backward lol.

:D giggles

I was born November 26th and the youngest in my grade but a straight A student all throughout school, I really dont think it matters.

I actually am stopping TTC come Nov because then I'd have a baby born Sept or after therefore having to wait until almost 6 to start school. My youngest right now has a bday of Sept 15 and won't be able to start school until he is almost 6yrs old..it's ridiculous. But I also don't want their bdays too close so that's also a factor. In feb I'd start again so at least it would be 5 and 3/4 or less instead of a couple weeks-month shy of turning 6

I used to think i wanted a baby in Sep-Dec because they would be the oldest in their year etc but since my loss i really don't care!

Once you start ttc you just want your baby and you don't care about the small things :)
