My midwife couldn't find a HB until 17 weeks, despite my seeing her weekly from week 13. For that reason alone, I wouldn't use a doppler, despite being tempted on a couple of occasions. If I couldn't find a HB, it would terrify me and I found the reassurance period I got after hearing a HB (once my MW could find it) got shorter and shorter each time x
