My 8month old daughter loves to drink from a straw, and so instead of a sippy cup, I have a cup with a straw thing that she gets her water/juice from.

Is it alright to give her this rather than a sippy cup?
She can drink from a cup, but doesnt really take much fluid from it, and she really enjoys drinking from a straw.

The cup I got her said 18months +... so I was wondering if it was okay to let her drink from it?
Also, can she take her milk feeds from this rather than a bottle?

Thanks

There may be some issue with it being worse for their teeth if they drink with a straw, on the other hand I may have imagined this or made it up! My daughter is older (21 months) but she also loves drinking through a straw. We only give her water though, she still has milk in a bottle (which is definitely bad for their teeth) and we need to wean her off that soon, which I am dreading!

ooh I though it was the opposite, as my dentist has always encouraged straws as he says its better for teeth than just sipping a cup/can etc

Ahhh well in that case I must have got my info mixed up then! I had not considered giving my daughter her milk in a cup with a straw - it might be worth a go as I think getting her off the bottle is going to be a task and a half! If it is not bad for their teeth then I can't see why you can't use it as much as you like :)

I don't see any problem with her using a straw, if she's happy doing it, why stop it and go backwards? :)

thats better well done lo! my dd also prefers a straw so i bought her cup with straw and its for about 18+months, its better for teeth as liquids dont touch teeth as much, i tried dd with milk through cup this mornin an she wouldnt have it so i gues i gota do that gradually!

if she will take it then do it! its better for her and u! xx

The girls love drinking through straws- I have found the tommee tippee straw beakers fab! x

I think the straws are better because from 9 months you get the straw sippy cups. And I think they could even drink from a normal cup if they are capable and that the ages are just a guide. & if lo can take her milk from a beaker instead that is even better. :)
