So my parents want to have a crib at their house for the baby. They have the crib that both my sister and I had when we were babies, but it's a drop down crib and those have since been recalled. I keep getting different answers about the safety issue. Some people say no, they're unsafe some infants died from them and then a lot of people say well we were all in drop down cribs and are just fine. It seems silly to get another crib when they have one but obviously I don't want to put the baby at risk. Thoughts?

Sorry what's a dropdown crib?? I've got a cot with drop sides??

just use a nail or screw of some kind to secure the side so it doesn't drop down anymore. that will give you peace of mind and save money too :happydance:

I heard that there are conversion kits that you can buy. you may want to check witht he manufacturer.

here is a photo: https://www.clevelandleader.com/node/12074

I take it they were only recalled in the US? Does the UK still use these type of cribs?

I've just bought one!! They all have drop down sides here as far as i know, all the big shops sell them.... Oooh dear!!

I don't believe every drop down crib was recalled but it was a massive recall. I would think if it's being sold now it's fine. I was just concerned because this was a crib from the 80's.

Can either nail the side up so can't drop down or just get a playpen for over there. That is what my mom has to use when she is watching my neices and nephews everyday. Perfectly safe for newborns and older as well. And much cheaper than buying a crib. Also can move around as needed when closer to newborn can keep it in main room where they will be and when a bit older can put into a spare room for naps.

my mom was sooooo baffled by the fact that cribs dont drop down anymore that we had a fight on teh phone about it.....

my dad did some thing to my old crib so the sides are permanent... it involved some kind of track removal i think and some screws...

I think the ones that were recalled were the newer ones with plastic parts and whatnot. I know you can still get them if you try really hard, but the majority of retailers aren't even selling them anymore (in the US).

If you're really worried about it, just fix it so the side doesn't drop anymore.

We brought a drop down with my son, brand new still being sold today so i would not be to worried

they still sell them in the uk drop side,, my crib isnt dropside and havnt brought a cot-cotbed yet but think id get one thats not dropside and thats not because of thr recall in the usa but just cause i got the conviences of the 3 heights with the base anyways

We used the bed my sister and I slept in for our son. It did not meet today's safety standards, as the side did drop and the slats were just a bit further apart than today's standards. But, we used a bumper pad around the perimeter, which I felt took care of the slat issue, and when he got more mobile, we used two small screws so the side couldn't drop abruptly.

Here is what I could find as far as crib recalls:

And here is why they are recalled:

You can buy a new, perfectly serviceable crib from IKEA for under $100. I bought a NICE crib off Craigslist for $120. All cribs are required to have the model and year of manufacture printed on them, so you can look them up and make sure it wasn't recalled. I wouldn't risk a 30 year old crib: there are lots of new safety regs and it just isn't that big of an expense.

And the "we turned out fine" thing is stupid. The babies that died aren't around to complain!

Yes, in the US all drop down cribs are off the market, and it is even illegal to sell them used. We have one, but we never used it anyway (co-sleep) so its not a big deal for us,

I got rid of our drop side crib my son had after it was recalled. We will be getting a new one this time around. To me its just one of those better safe that sorry things. Like you never think something like that will happen to you until it does.

Thoughts?

Drop down cribs are no longer sold in the USA because 32 children died from getting trapped in the sides. You can no longer sell them at consignment stores and Goodwill and places like that will no longer take them.

https://www.webmd.com/parenting/news/20101215/drop-side-cribs-banned-safety-issues

For the sake of a $100 and babys safety, I'd get a new one. It's all very well thinking "Oh they will be fine" .. but I'm sure one of the 32 sets of parents thought that also you know? Better to be safe and sorry. They don't ban and take something off the market with out good reason.
