Hey ladies,

I've been really hating on my hair fr awhile, since before getting pregnant even. I dyed it blonde last year, and it's grown out a lot since. It's looking like a mess and I want to look nice for my pregnancy photos. I'm wondering if it's safe to go to the salon to dye it. Is it just unsafe during the first tri or for the whole pregnancy?

I've dyed (bleached actually) my hair three times this pregnancy, trying to get out a darker color and I plan on stripping it in a week or so. I've read things that said no, but then again I've read no finger nail polish or remover either so...I just did it. My doctor didn't bat an eye when I came in with a different color hair style.

I have read the same about nail polish. I haven't found one source saying it's safe for either so I haven't even done my nails since getting pregnant and I feel so blah because of it. If it's not safe, I won't do it, but I really want to so I just want to know.

I dyed my hair the whole way through with my son, and have been this time too, in fact I have a packet of dye I bought this morn to do my regrowth this arvo, some people think it can seep through your scalp into your blood but I think the liklihood of that is very very though, just make sure you are in a ventilated room, or that the salon isnt too stinky so you're not breathing in heaps of bleach fumes

I would say the same with nails, as long as you're not breathing in the fumes, ie some of the nail places can get really stinky if they do alot of acrylics, but at home with ventilation you'll be fine or a smaller salon that doesnt have heaps of people getting nails done all at once

Just dyed mine last week. It's fine as long as you're not inhaling the fumes!

I died mine when I was 12 weeks! It was awful I had to. I think you'll be fine. They say to avoid in 1st tri, I died mine when pregnant with my daughter. As the others said just try not to breathe in the fumes.

I asked my midwife at 8 weeks and she said go for it, just to keep a window open if you're doing it yourself x

I dyed my hair last week, it was the first time since I got my BFP because my hair was a mess and couldn't help myself also I have acrylic nails on and get them done every 2wks and I did while pregnant with DD and she is totally fine x

I don't dye my hair in pregnancy. I just don't like the idea of all the chemicals, but I don't even paint my nails cos I read that can be bad too lol. I'm a bit over the top careful.

Completely down up to you, my best friend who is 5 weeks ahead of me pregnant with her first will not touch hair dye… whilst I dyed my hair in my last pregnancy and it was fine, and I’ve done it in this one as well x

I've dyed mine throughout this pregnancy.

I've dyed mine several times this pregnancy already and did in my previous.

As others have said, good ventilation and dye not left on for hours then you should be fine.

I have choose not to I am judt letting the grey come. Its only hair.

My OB said it's absolutely fine in a well ventilated area. I opened all my windows and dyed my hair on the linoleum by the front door, with the front door cracked open for more air. I did it like that because my bathroom has no windows

Okay, thanks ladies! You have all been very helpful :) I'm so excited to be free to dye my mess of hair now :happydance:

Sometimes hair reacts differently to dyes when you are pregnant, or so I read, but aside from that as long as it's well ventilated you don't need to worry.

As for nails - a girl has to have some joys left right? :haha: Same thing re: ventilation. I do my nails all the time at home, just open window wide and wear a sweater :)

i was told it was chemicals you need to worry about, if doing it at home not to leave bleach or ammonia on too long and ventilate well. i decided while i'm pregnant just not to bleach or strip and i use Revlon brand for color dying because they make ammonia free color formulas. salons cost wayy too much imo. i do my own nails at home every 2 weeks and DF paints my toes. i <3 nails lol

I'm using henna hair dye...it's completely natural - a plant! safe for pregnancy

I had mine dyed last week at the hairdressers. They'll do a skin test to make sure the increase in hormones hasn't affected how you react to dye. The only precaution is with dyes you but at the shops as they can be high in peroxide. Most salons have low peroxide dyes and they have said there is no rule against dying your hair during pregnancy.
