Is it possible?

I've read some conflicting information and I don't know what's what!

I dye my hair red and usually I have it coloured professionally but since losing my job I've been doing it myself with bottle dye.

Now I know bottle dye's have alot more chemicals in than having mine done professionally with creme peroxide and the creme colour.

I don't want to lose my red hair but I don't want to harm my baby.

Any advice is appreciated :flower:

From what I have read, I think its just a bit of a myth that you cant dye your hair. As long as you have plenty of ventilation there shouldnt be a problem. Lots and lots of ladies have asked the same thing on here and the response has always been the same :)

i asked my midwife this, and she said the jury is still out on this one, but a slong as youve used the dye before and as someone else said have lots of ventilation, then it should be fine, just be prepaered for it not to be the exact colour it was pre pregnancy as yr hormones can alter this. i dyed mine at around 8 wks, had scan at 9 wks and babies looked fine. im 11 wks almostish, so mine will need re doing agian soon as i use semi permanent and itll be fading soon.

Hmmmm I might have to bite the bullet and get my friend to do it properly because atleast if my roots aren't lifting the right colour she can adjust it there and then :haha:

You MUST MUST MUST! do a strand test first. Although dying your hair is supposed to be ok using a dye you have used before is dangerous without a strand test. Pregnancy hormones can actually change how your body reacts to a certain dye. I only know about this because my friend has recently been to A&E to have burns on her scalp treated where she reacted badly to a dye she has used loads of times before and the doctors told her it was probably due to her hormones (she is 5 months pregnant). Your hormones can increase your sensitivity to some chemicals so please if you are doing it then do the strand test :flower:

Thanks hun. I am going to either do a patch and strand test with bottle dye I've been using or when get my hairdresser friend to colour my hair again for me but again, patch test the creme colour and creme peroxide first.

I thought hair dye was a huge no no so am glad that I still might be able to keep my red hair :flower:

I've been told that its okay to dye your hair if you use foils because then the dye doesn't actually touch your head but according to my day by day pregnancy book..

There is no evidence that the chemicals in hair dyes are dangerous in pregnancy. Most permanent and non permanent dyes contain chemicals that are unlikely to be toxic when used in the small amounts taken to dye hair, and only every few months but if you are worried stick to natural dyes or highlights which don't expose the whole scalp to dye.

It also says when colouring your hair to do it in a well ventilated space and always use the gloves provided.

I have always dyed my hair when pregnant, but like someone else said it can turn out a different color, sometimes it just doesnt take so well. Do a strand test first, but if thats fine then do it :)
