I have an appointment at the Early Pregnancy Unit tomorrow, as I was spotting red bloos at the weekend. They are going to do a scan, but told me at 5 weeks it's generally too early to see any thing and some blood tests. They said they would also do a scan at 6 weeks or later until they saw some thing.

has any one been to an appointment at the EPU? If so could you let me know what to expect? Just has a really stressful weekend and want to know what to expect.

Thanks

I was referred to the EPU at 5+6 through A&E because of bleeding. I had a transvaginal scan, which means they use a 'wand' to do the scan via your vagina. It isn't painful at all, just a little uncomfortable. For me the first thing she did was point out there was a heartbeat and then showed me everything else. She was very good and put me at ease.

At 5 weeks you may just see the beginnings of a sac or you may see nothing as it is very early, so be prepared for that.

Good luck xx

ive had 4 scans so far 1 at 6 weeks 1 at 7 weeks 6 days n the my normal 12 n 20 weeks scan 1st 2 where because of bleeds, and i went up to EPU all times, 1st to were emergancy 1s, and i had to wait for a nurse to come see me, she asked lots of questions like how, how was the bleeding how did it look like how much how long for etc, asked about medication if any asked about previous pregnancy n losses also took my blood presure and bloods, then asked for a urine sample, next i had a scan, then i seen the nurse again to explain what they saw and what they think caused the bleed, nothing i got any answered they just told me they didnt know why but it was common and it was more likey a thing called "breakthrough bleed" which is very common around the time y ou AF is due she gave me a little leaflet to explain everything and the times and telephone nu,mber if it happened again so you can talk to them direct .. idk if yours will be the same .. x

Hi hun, I had spotting at around the same time.
Its likely you will have to go back at least once for a follow-up.

They'll ask a few questions about the bleeding, take the blood sample to check your hormone levels and may also ask for a urine sample to check for infection but they dont always do this.
This early on the scan may be internal. It's not painful at all, and only goes a little way. I barely felt it! Please dont be alarmed if they dont find anything as at 5 weeks, the sac is teeny tiny!

You may need to go back for more bloods in a couple of days so they can make sure your hcg levels are rising, then maybe go back a week later for another scan if they didn't see a lot in the first one.

I had a really good experience with EPU. I first saw them at 4 weeks and they looked after me and checked up on me for an entire month before they were happy and I was happy that it was all progressing the way it should be. xx
