Expired tests?

Ok this may seem like kind of a duh question but if you use an expired test (or a test close to the expiration date) is it possible to get a false negative? I'm asking because my periods are typically like clockwork and I'm currently 3 days late. I've taken several ICs that I had leftover from my last pregnancy, which expire November 2018, so not actually expired yet but close, and they've all been negative. We weren't planning on getting pregnant, as you can read from my siggy, but I've never been late in the past unless I was pregnant so idk what's going on.
