Ask my ped about extended nursing today and although he was supportive about nursing to a year he seemed less excited about nursing past it. He wasn't negative about it at all but insisted that I give her whole milk once a day (again after she turns one) for her brain development.

I really don't like the ideal of that at all. My husband has milk intolerance issues and I don't drink milk that much myself. I get the calcium thing but not the brain development.

Please tell me I am not wrong in thinking she can get those same benefits from other things.. and if so what?

Neither of my children have ever had cow's milk and I don't drink it either. Both of their brains are fine.

If your child cannot drink milk due to an allergy or a family lifestyle choice, consult your physician for the best ways to include fats in your child’s diet. Potential sources are eggs, olive or flax oil and almond butter. If your child is lactose intolerant, you can try full-fat cheese or yogurt, which might be better tolerated than milk. Leafy greens, soy milk and fortified juices are nondairy sources of calcium and possibly vitamin D.

There are other foods then milk that are good for childrens brains.

I make my own almond milk which is full of calcium

4Cups water
1Cup almonds (soaked overnight)
3 dates (for sweetness)

Put it in a blender, strain and its good to go. I found blending the almonds with just a little bit of water helped them to blend better
