I am really not liking my doctor - I first took ds when he was about 3 months old and she didnt seem to believe that I hadnt started weaning or given any formula. He has eczema and she thought it was caused by food. Nope!

Anyway I had an appointment for myself last week about my persistent sore nipple and she said "well what are your plans for b/feeding anyway now that he is 6 months?" She was clearly put out about "wasting her time" treating my nipple when I should be giving up soon anyway and made several comments which made her feelings clear.

Today I took ds back as we started weaning 3 weeks ago and he has had several reactions to foods. Again she was in disbelief that he has only just started weaning and recommended just giving pureed fruit and vegetables until we can see a specialist and said he NEEDS to be on baby rice as he needs carbs. I said I had planned not to give baby rice or anything processed and she proceeded to tell me that its good enough for the rest of the world so why not my baby?!?

Anyway, her final comment was that since he is on limited foods and starting weaning slowly until we can figure out these allergies, breast milk is really not as good for him as formula which has added iron and vitamin d which he needs. She is totally unsupportive of my continuing to breastfeed -

Am I mad that I am planning to ignore the majority or her advice? Formula can not be what he needs can it?! :nope:

She probably doesn't even realise the extent to which formula advertising has corrupted her brain. Crazy. It shows how insiduous it can be.

Can you switch to a different GP?

If she knows this little about BFing, what other misinformation is in her brain?

There seems to be a huge myth about iron levels, weaning and breastfeeding. Of course BM is fine! There's no need for babies to have formula with added iron. This is simply a product of advertising for follow on milk formula.

And don't worry about getting vitamins etc from food just yet either, up til one food is fun, not about giving baby nutrients!

Thanks ladies! I know she is talking crap but it just really annoyed me- I dread to think how many mums have given up on breastfeeding after receiving her "professional advice."

Will be changing surgeries as soon as possible!
