I know it sounds a bit crazy-cat-lady, but my cat has quite a nervous temperament especially around new things/people and is even frightened of my birthing ball. He's been hiding a lot and very nervous as baby stuff has been arriving in 'his' territory.

I've read about Feliway diffusers which reduce stress in cats, they're quite expensive (£20 inc. postage) but I've been worrying about how he'll react when we suddenly bring a baby home and everything smells different and there's new equipment out all the time.

Has anyone tried Feliway before? Does it work? Would 1 month be long enough to just smooth things over while he gets used to all the new?

Thanks x

You don't sound like a crazy cat lady at all. We have a 4 year old male cat called Buba who is like a baby himself. He has been very clingy while I have been pregnant and is very curious about all the baby things - not to mention the nursery (which is opposite our room) has been Buba's bedroom for the past year!

Anyway... we have debated how Buba will react he may be jealous and obviously we wont leave the cat alone with the baby - but we know Buba doesn't like loud, screaching noises and has been terrified of our friends young children (hiding and making himself like a pancake under the sofa) so we will do our best to make him feel... loved, secure, happy etc.

I haven't used the feliway plug ins but we have a spray we have used when taking him to the vet. Cats are adaptable as long as they have some consistency. Buba has moved house three times in his short life and coped fine with the moving but we have always made sure he has all of his things around him.

Anyway... we will let you know how our cat is... 39 weeks today so hoping not long now.

I haven't used it but sounds like it wouldn't hurt. Maybe a few times a week take out some baby stuff too. I've also read that before you bring baby home, get someone to bring something that smells like them, like a hat they used. Good luck!

I'd be interested in this too, we've actually just bought some for when we move in 3 weeks time (great timing I know lol!) If you have a look on medicanimal.com we ordered the 15ml for about £5.70 instead of buying the big one as I don't we'll need loads of it, so even if it is a load of crap you've not wasted a load of money xx

Feliway is FAB! Both our cats were very nervous semi-ferral when we got them and it definitely helped them settle in. Then when we moved house 6 months ago we bought a couple of diffusers for the house and again it really helped. Then suddenly one day they started wetting in the house, I look and the stuff had run out! Bought some more and the wetting stopped!

Hunt about online though for the best deal.

Feliway is great. Sorted out our two nutters!:-) got ours from an online pharmacy. Much cheaper than boots or pets at home:-)

we used it as well and will be this time
can recommend it!!
:hugs:

Definitely recommend feliway! We use the plug in and the spray, works wonders everytime. We've three cats and temperaments can run high when there's big changes and they've always been fine since using feliway, especially when we got our dog

I have used feiliway and would totally recommend them even though they are pricey. I haven't used it with a baby before but will do when mine arrives as I think charlie will freak when bubs cries! I did use it when Charlie was getting bullied by a neighbour (human kind!! who thank god has moved house) and it totally chilled her out. I have also used the one for dogs with my Mums dog when she moved house and she was so happy and chilled which made life a lot easier!

Yep, get the Feliway, it works great. I've used it in the past when we moved and I'll be getting some again for when lo arrives :)

I'm very interested in this, I've never even heard of this! But I have two cats and this could help... Anyone know if this is available in Canada???

I love feliway but agree that it can get kind of expensive especially since you normally need more than one depending on the size of your house. If you only have one cat it might be cheaper to use a pheromone collar. I use Sentry Good Behavior Collar for Cats. They range from 10-15 dollars depending on where I get them. It normally lasts for about 5 weeks before I need to put on a new one. It's really helped!!

Well my cat only really goes in the living room and the hallway which are linked, so hopefully that'll be ok.

This is the cheapest I've found if anyone is interested! Delivery is free so it works out cheaper than the ones that are £15ish. At 'Pets at Home' it's £37!!!
