Hi everyone,

I got a call from daycare today that my 15 month old son Alistair had a fever of 104.3 and to come get him right away.

First of all, I had never heard of a little one actually having a fever this high! I freaked out!

Secondly, am I overreacting in my anger that they didn't check his temp until it was 104? Surely they would have noticed something wrong with him earlier and checked it before it got that high? Or do they spike that rapidly?

When we got to the doctor's office he looked really unwell, not acting normal at all and just looking like I'd never seen him. His fever went right down with ibuprofen and they prescribed antibiotics for an ear infection.

He also has a cough and chest congestion. The doctor's didn't seem worried but I was in tears!

I'm just wondering if any of you have experienced a fever that high with your LOs and what you did?

It just seems so high! We keep dosing him with Motrin and he's sleeping soundly for now. I just feel so bad for him. :(

Oh darling i know how you must feel.i had the same situation once it turned out it was ear infection too.i hope your Lo will get better soon !

Allie I was like you last month (remember my crazy posts???). Hero had a fever of 105 before i noticed it. She was literally perfect when she went to bed and i checked on her before i went to sleep and she was burning up!!! I spent all night trying to bring down her temp and managed and this went on for 3 days. Its scary hun but apparently very common!

Babies and toddlers can spike fevers very quickly, so it isn't necessarily that your daycare wasn't watching carefully. Twice my LO has had his temp shoot up to 103 in the space of about 30 minutes or less- once it was roseola, the second time just an unexplained fever that lasted two days. I gave him Tylenol and kept his fluids up, and he was fine.

Tom has always spiked very high temps when he's not well. His first winter at nursery we had lots of phone calls saying his temp was 40c plus (over 104F) and that it had shot up within 15 - 20 mins.

Last night he'd gone to bed with a bit of a temp and I knew he wasn't 100%. I checked him about 9.45pm and he was fine...by 10.15pm he was shaking and delirious and his temp was 39.6c or over 103F. 2 doses of paracetamol and a dose of ibuprofen brought it down but it was scary and I was on the phone to the out of hours doctors. Saw his doctor this morning and it's a viral infection.

Keep the paracetamol etc up to keep his temp down, lots of fluids and cuddles and he should be fine. And it isn't necessarily the daycare weren't watching...they can spike really high temps very quickly.

I agree they can spike temperatures really quickly :hugs: I hope he gets better soon :hugs:

Thanks, girls.

I'm glad to know it's not uncommon to get fevers that high. The worst fever Alistair has ever had before this was 102 and this is his first ever ear infection.

We're home today and he's had loads of cuddles and pedialyte , although he won't eat. I'm keeping up with the ibuprofen and I hope the worst is passed.

Thanks again for the reassurance.

I rushe little Leyla into the ER last month for a sudden temp of 105.2!! She is my third child and didn't know fevers could get that high. She went down for a nap completely normal and woke up with it, so they spike very high very quickly.

In my case, they treatedher for an ear infection, although they said with a fever that high the ear infection must've been secondary to a viral infection.
Just thought to let you know that the docs weren't overly concerned about the temp.

We fought the temp for about 2 days, then she was good as new! Keep pushing the fluids and he should be better in no time.:hugs:
