Hi lovely ladies. Went for a scan today (I'm 8+2) and all good with baby but they noticed a fibroid measuring around 4cm or so. The midwife said it "shouldn't" affect the pregnancy but my trusted old friend Google has come up with a lot of other theories. Just wondered if anyone has personal experience of fibroids during pregnancy? I've been scaring myself reading about all the complications they can cause :wacko: xx

Hi Im unsure but Iv just had my 21 weeks scan and found one, she wasnt concerned just measured it and my consultant said oh you have a Fibroid.. That was all that was said... what can happen or dos google say? xxx

There is a lot of debate among Doctors as to the effect of fibroids on pregnancy. Some believe they have no affect, others believe they can cause miscarriage and premature birth.
I'm sure you have nothing to worry about but unfortunately that wasn't what happened to me. I had 2 missed miscarriages, it was only after the second I was referred to a specialist and after an ultrasound and MRI concluded that although they could not say 100% it was likely my fibroid caused them. I had a myomectomy to remove my fibroid which was around 5cm by 5cm and have since had a little boy and am now almost 12 weeks pregnant again.
As you have had a scan and baby is fine it's likely you will be ok, it all depends on the size and location of fibroid - unfortunately mine was in a position to stop the blood flow to the baby.

Sorry if this sounds negative -it's just my story and i hope yours will be much brighter.

I had one with my last pregnacy and it didn't seem to cause me any issues they mentioned it I think during my first scan at around 12 weeks and then it was never bothered with again I now have a heathy two year old

Thanks for all your replies, really appreciate them all.
TTC1983 do you mind me asking what stage your mmcs happened at? I'm just wondering how soon the fibroid has an effect on baby if it is in a position to reduce blood supply? Thanks for being honest, I'd rather know all possible situations than be oblivious!xx

With my first MMC I was 10 weeks 6 days when I started to bleed, baby had died a couple of weeks earlier, with my second I was around 9 weeks and again baby had died a couple if weeks before.
I will say in both pregnancies I had very little symptoms of pregnancy, only a little tiredness which doesn't compare to the exhaustion of my successful pregnancies. If you are having lots of symptoms I would say it is a good sign.

It really depends on the type of fibroid you have, it's location and how it reacts to the pregnancy hormones. My friend for eg had a pedunculated anterior fibroid during her first pregnancy. It started causing trouble around 13 weeks until 28 weeks when it finally started to degenerate ( die). She was in extreme pain and spent months in and out of hospital on morphine and bedrest. Luckily it didn't affect the baby at all! It just made her pregnancy awfully painful bc it grew so much with the hormones that at one point it was competing with the fetus for blood flow... When she hit 28 weeks though the pain subsided and she enjoyed the rest of her pregnancy. When her daughter was 6 months old she had a myomecty to remove the fibroid at the root. Has since had another pregnancy with zero issues. Also not all fibroids react that way, it depends on the kind that you have. Some just remain un noticed and cause no trouble Xox

As previous poster mentioned there's a lot of specifics that can determine how or if they will affect a pregnancy. There are 3 "layers" that a fibroid can be IN besides where in your uterus they are-the inner most layer closest to the baby, the middle membranes and the outside uterine wall. I have always had 3- one in each layer:dohh:

They didn't affect my pregnancy with my almost 2 year old daughter and so far they haven't been a problem with this pregnancy going on 14 weeks. My RE said that unless they baby manages to implant on or right next to the fibroid that she hasn't seen any issues with them previously. She said the main concern she has with them is they make getting pregnant more difficult because where they are is one less hospitable place an egg can implant. Hopefully you will be in the majority that have no issues!
