Xx

Wow my 6.5mth old doent do finger foods :(

But maybe bananas, steamed carrots, peas??

Cucumber sticks are great - leave the skin on, perfect for teething gums.
Any fruit cut into wedges (cook the hard ones)
Rice cakes with cream cheese or hummus or peanut butter
Round O shaped cereal - we get an organic quinoa and rice one. He loves practising picking them up
Lightly frozen banana quarters (again, great for teething)
Avocado slices - these can be slippy but I roll the bottom half in flax meal so he has something to hold.
Waitrose sells a really handy microwave fresh veggie pouch that has perfectly sized butternut squash and carrots and broccoli florets. I love it when I'm in a rush as it only takes a few minutes to cook and LO gets fresh veggies. Not sure if you have Waitrose where you are xxx

Oooo, thank you everyone! Some good ideas! I can get to Waitrose fairly easily so I will have to go for a look x

I give my lo

Toast
Sandwhiches
Melon
Cheese
Eggs
Mini scotch eggs ( he loved them)

And I'm trying pasta tonight

It's easy just now tho as he has two teeth. He is 7 months next week x

I struggle with finger foods at the minute as I'm really fearful of choking! I only like to give stuff that is fairly easy for him to mush, so sandwiches with crusts off, banana, broccoli, rusks. I think once he has a couple of teeth I'll get a little more adventurous!!

I want to give pieces of cheese, but how do you serve it? Do you cut it into sticks, I don't want to cut it too big or too small?!

Can I ask a dumb question, I'm worried about choking and giving lo cheese or something freaks me out!! Am I being silly?

Xx

LDC - with baby led weaning (as opposed to traditional purees) you give baby fingers sized, grabable food and let them feed themselves. They do gag quite a bit which is a bit scary but perfectly natural. I did a first aid course a couple of weeks ago just in case but actual choking is rare because babies have such a good gag reflex.

We are on day 6 with Alexander (just turned 6 months) and successful foods have been:
Big strawberries
Dried apricots (big moist ones rather than hard ones)
Toast with mashed banana/hummus/cream cheese/peanut butter
Rice cakes with same as toast
Steamed apple slices
Cheese cut into sticks
Strips of chicken
Cucumber
Cheese on toast
Cinnamon and raisin bagel
Sweet potatoe wedges

He didn't like asparagus or broccoli but his expressions made it worthwhile!!

To try this weekend:
Melon (sliced with skin on for gripping)
Mango
Potato wedges
Hardish scrambled egg

I was so worried about him choking at first but haven't had a problem yet. Sometimes he gags a little and takes it back out of his mouth.
I also spoon feed purees and yogurts. But if I load the spoon he can feed it to himself. He loves feeding himself, it makes him so happy, I'm not sure how much of the finger food he actually swallows, so I do spoon feed him as well. I started purees at 4 months, he is on three meals a day now.
I tried scrambled egg but he hated it :( plenty here to try though. It's great fun! He has started drinking from his beaker too.
I think I need a good shopping trip. Thanks everyone x

I've tried
dried apricots, prunes, apple
fresh mango, pear, peach, strawberries, banana, mango
peas, avocado, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, cucumber, peppers
hard boiled egg (in quarters)
chicken, salmon, cod, mackerel (he loves fish!)
cheese, sort of cut into a finger stick but he shoved the whole lot in, didn't go down great!
sweet potato wedges
mash potato
baked beans/spaghetti hoops
toast with peanut butter (no whole nuts) cream cheese, tiny bit of marmite
and couscous but he found that hard to pick up!
there's more because as long as it's healthy i just hand it to him!

Stupid question but when you refer to finger stick sized food, do you mean the size of your finger or your lo's? Thanks!

Hiya I cut up pasta into small pieces and steam a tomato taking the skin off and mashing it together. Not really a finger food though :dohh:

Cheese on toast
mango
Avocado
Banana
Egg sandwiches

Our DD eats a lot of home made mashed up food also. We just go with it really.
Fish pie, sweet potato and spinach, Beef and sweet potato....

You may guess sweet potato is our/her fav first time we have eaten it too. yum x

My LO used to gag on practically everything until about 10 months. It was really worrying and at times I just gave up on finger foods and fed him puréed stuff. One day he just grabbed a piece of marmite toast off me and chewed away, since then I slowly got him onto more complex stuff and now he tries a bit of everything. They find a way to stop gagging and learn to chew properly. My LO only has 4 teeth with another four coming through now, so he has managed to chew lots of things without molars.

Food he likes to eat-

Marmite on toast
Sandwiches cut into strips with spread inside
Chopped mangoes, papaya, kiwi and banana
Asparagus spears
Omelette cut into strips
Yorkshire puddings cut into small pieces
Chips
Cucumber sticks
Heinz organic biscuits ( good for practicing chewing with as they are crunchy but melt in the mouth)
Satsumas
Watermelon
Broccoli

Hiya,

You could try grating the cheese. I think its more our worry than there's.
Your def not alone, When I hand my LO certain foods I have to sometimes take a deep breath but at the same time look relaxed for her. Instead she probably looks at me and thinks why has mummy a really strange expression on her face. lol

Your definitely not silly, its a natural feeling :)
