Hi all

My first scan is tomorrow at the early pregnancy unit and i will be ten weeks. My first midwife appointment isnt until the 7th Feb so i am unsure what happens.

Can i just ask if it is better to go along with a full bladder or not? I googled this and got a mixed response.

Any info would be great.

The ask that you have a fairly full bladder at the earlier scans to help them see better. Drink a glass of water an hour before the scan, If I was uncomfortable when I had my scans I used to just let a little bit of pee out whilst waiting, made it more bearable!

my letter says drink 1.5 pints of water at least two hours before your scan. i did this for an early scan and ended up having to wee it all out minutes before my scan cos i got so desperate for the toilet.

i went to the toilet 3 times between getting to the hospital and getting on the scan bed. husband said just pee out a little. but it was impossible :haha: i just had to let it all out - it just felt too good! :) i had my water bottle so kept topping myself up again but still was too empty for my scan.

my 10wk scan I drank about half a litre of water an hour beforehand and they said it was great - i was praying they didn't push down too hard or i'd wet myself!

I think it depends if they are going to do an internal or external. I had an internal the other day and had to go with an empty bladder. Can you ring and ask?

I have been trying to get through to them but constantly engaged or rings out grrr!

Thanks for the advice, i think i will just drink before i go and at least its quicker to empty my bladder than to fill it :)

My midwife gave me a great tip. She said to drink plenty during the morning beforehand anyway to keep myself hydrated and keep water flowing through my system. Then she said to empty my bladder completely and THEN drink a pint of water before I set off for the appointment (or about 20-30 mins before the appointment, depends on how far away you are!). That meant that by the time I was on the table, I wasn't so desperate that I was uncomfortable but the bladder was full enough to see the bub clearly. And they usually have a toilet v. close by to use afterwards!
