Hi

As agreed with my HV I have decided its time to start LO with some solid food.

She said if he pushes it out with his tongue he isn't ready.

Well I tried him with some puréed carrots and breast milk and he sort of swirled it around in his mouth, then swallowed some and also quite a bit ended up on his face.

When he swallowed it he gagged a few times then he breathed in like he was choking a couple of times and then was sick. Is this normal for the first time? It was a bit scary!

Every baby adapts differently, especially when they are on the younger end, gagging is totally normal they have a strong reflex for gagging and they do get past it!
I BLW have you considered that approach?

I imagine the sick was a result of the gagging chick.

xo

As your LO is only turning 5 months, unless it was for a medical reason, then I would just wait til 6 months. So much easier to just offer milk!

I started my son at 6.5 months and he ate the lot, he was ready for it too.:flower:

No its not normal hun. Babies not ready if they gag on it. Id give it a few weeks then try again. Im going to sound stupid saying this but make sure its only tiny bits your putting in.

I disagree with your h.v though....pushin it out with their tongue does not mean they are not ready, they simply dont know what they are supposed to do. It takes a few tries before they actually get that they are supposed to swallow it all. Iv been weaning for a week now and my lil guy loves his grub but still pushes some out as he's eating x

With BLW do I basically just put the purée in front of him on his tray then? Will maybe try that later then

My HV said try him on some baby rice but I'm not sure

Babyrice is empty calories, no goodness :nope:

I'd try that, let him try dip his fingers in, mush it around, chew it off his fingers, that way he learns the textures etc and is less likely to gag.

BLW is more, don't puree just give them the food, but hes still young really.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything so please don't take it that way. But when you say you're weaning your son is your ticker right? 3 months old?

It's not recommended at even 4 months old, a lot of medical professionals are going by outdated guidelines. Even my doctor said at 4 months I should wean and I did. I totally regret it. We stopped after a week or so then started properly at 6 months old. The tongue thrust reflex is definitely something that should be gone before you start weaning, it's one of the big ones on the "check list"

It seems everyone has different info, just spoke to my HV and she said gagging is normal when you first start weaning as they don't know what to do with the food and don't know how to swallow it and the only way they are going to learn is by trying it.

Gagging IS normal. My LO still gags. We all gag as adults. The tongue thrust reflex is different from gagging though. Your HV said if he pushes the food out with his tongue then he's not ready, that's what he means. I think as a baby they will always push it out in the beginning but if it's pretty much the whole spoonful then that's when you know! :)

Dont worry i dont see your comment as rude hun. Yes my ticker is right. My son is 14 weeks old and is being weaned slowly. I did the same with ds1 under h.v advice. I dont go by recommendations i go by my children, he has shown interest in food for a while now so im letting him try different things. He has 4 or 5 baby spoons of whatever it is he is trying. If he didnt like it or pushed it all back out of his mouth then i would wait and try again but he loves it so i will carry on. My h.v this time asked if i wanted a weaning discussion at 14 weeks whih i refused but whenni had him weighed i mentioned id started weaning and the h.v jut asked what he thought of ot and said good when i said he loves it. To be honest there is so much contradictive info out there that i dont even bother reading it.
By 6 months my eldest was onto lump and by 8 months could eat most things put in front of him. I still stick to the no dairy till 6 months and no egg but thats it. At the moment he is learning the tastes of fruits and veg.

Sorry very long winded, as I say I go by my child and not all the gobbeldy gook put out about weaning. Every hild is different and will wean at different times, heck back in the day weaning was started at 2 months.

Gem have you tried rusk, it goes to a lovely purree in your babies milk xx

I started lo at 4.5 months and she never gagged. If she had I would've stopped. I understand that conflicting advise is hard to figure out. My lo's dietician and PHN (HV) said to start at 19 weeks but other said to wait.
I tried at 20 weeks and lo was fine.
Do you what you feel is right.
Mother know's best sometimes.

Thats so true, every h.v seems to give different advice. I was told if they gag theyr not ready for it. If ts conti ued gagging though it might need looked into as they get older. My nephew was still struggling and gagging a lot on food at 1 year old.

Thank u, I may try him again tomorrow or a few days.

What is rusk? Xxx

I would say it was normal to gag initially. i would persist if you think he is ready
I have three children and each one I have been given different advice! First child advice was 12 weeks to wean so i followed advice as first baby, my second child it was advised at 6 months but he was 10lb 4 oz born and by 17 weeks was hysterical at my meal times and was ready to wean and on advice started. Now my youngest is 16 weeks and is already going down same route is drinking up to 7 bottles of 7 oz a day trying to up to 8 oz and she brings it back up:wacko: so holding off for min of 17 weeks but in my opinion each baby different you have to do what you think is best within reason hope that makes sence:winkwink:

Google farleys rusks hun, thy sell them in supermarkets with all the rest of the baby food. Can be made to a purree to start with then as a snack biscuit when they are older xx

I wouldn't go for rusks. There's more sugar in a farleys rusk than in a milk chocolate digestive even the reduced sugar ones have still got allot in them.

Agree with the above, I've never given rusk for that reason. Starting a baby's weaning journey on rusk isn't a great start. I would just puree down fruit and veggies for now if you want to wean early, because the digestive system is still immature.

I wouldn't give a rusk!
Babies tastebuds are more susceptible to sweet, therefore its better to offer savory foods as first ones, especially things with good nutritional value, pureed veg etc. Sweet foods are better offered in fruit form.

A lot of good information has been given but I would like to add that DS gags when he eats something he doesn't like. I fed him peas one time and he gagged on every bite then threw it up. Maybe it will be better with a different food.
