Ok so, this afternoon, my husband brought me lunch from this great diner in town. It was a vietnamese chicken noodle soup.
So here is my question:
The soup had a VERY VERY fish taste to it...I only had about half of the soup and noodles...my husband thinks that part of their soup broth has fish oil or seasoning added to it.
Is this ok??? I never ate fish in my first pregnancy...and there are questions with the safety of fish and links to development issues with kids.
Does anyone have insight into this? I am really trying not to worry...
I felt sick afterwards literally, but I'm fine now.

Fish is good in pregnancy! The baby needs omega 3 for brain development :)

This should help hun. There are some fish you should limit/avoid

As long as the fish is cooked I think the only real concern is mercury, and in that regard most fish are fine to eat in moderation.

You can see more info here...

Most fish is fine, recommended in fact. It was probably fish sauce in the soup which is used a lot in Asian cooking - can be very strong flavoured but won't cause you any harm at all!

Damn, I fancy noodle soup now!! Xx

Thanks Ladies, my problem is that I don't know what type of fish or whatever they used in the soup broth. VERY fishy tasting. hmmm I guess I will try to relax about it.

Do you happen to know what's in fish sauce? I've never had it before.

It would have been only a small amount anyway, not liek a whole fish so I really wouldnt worry. There are still people who eat blue cheese, shell fish and other things that we get told not to eat! So a tiny bit of fish wont be a problem x

It really depends on the kind you were eating. https://thaifood.about.com/od/introtothaicooking/p/aboutfishsauce.htm
I use fish sauce in my food sometimes, it is safe for you, just gross when you think about the process.

Well I cook Thai food fairly often and use fish sauce in most recipes. The ones I use tend to be made from anchovies which is why they are so strong flavoured, not sure what else is in the sauces but it's only fish with high levels of mercury like swordfish, marlin, fresh tuna etc that are not advised to bd eaten in pregnancy and I'm certain fish sauce doesn't contain those. Will have a look for you though, but I really wouldn't worry, eating something fishy once wont cause you any problems x

Thank you sooo much for your reply! I feel a bit better now! I've been soooo careful with my eating in general, and was so disappointed after I realized what I ate lol:dohh:

Just found something that says south east Asian fish sauce is usually made from anchovies, salt and water and found another link that says anchovies are an oily fish and good for you in pregnancy so all sounds fine xx
