I don't even know if I have the heart to try again , but I have been taking Folic Acid right after my Ava died 5 weeks ago, I don't know why. . I am still waiting for the results , but they think it was Trisomy 18 plus I am 40 and I know I am high risk so I don't know what I am going to do yet. I have 3 boys 20,17 and 11. So my question is : is taking Folic Acid a good thing for me, just in case I do try again I will have 2 months of taking it before and if I try again .?
Thanks :hugs::hugs::hugs:

When I went 2 the dr 13 months ago she told me that 2 take folic acid while you are trying bc it helps your immune system and if u do get pregnant it will help the babys until you can get on prenatal pills. I even asked the pharmacy and she told me that thats the nest thing to take while tryin until you get on your pills. I have been taken them for the last 13 months and just started on my prenatal. I hope this helps you. Im sorry for your loss I hope that everything works out for you.

Thank you very much . I am wondering though would 2 months of taking it help at all, I mean you are on it 13 months.
Thanks Again :hugs::hugs::hugs: And should I be taking anything else?

I 'm really sorry to hear about your loss...

I don't think there's any harm in taking the folic acid while you're figuring stuff out. At least then if you do go on to TTC again you'll be prepared.

I hope everything works out for you. :hugs:

First, sorry for your loss. I couldn't imagine the emotions you are feeling.
They say it is good to start taking folic acid 2-3 months before trying to conceive as it will help prevent birth defects. You can also start taking a prenatal, doesn't have to be prescription. This will give the supplements enough time to get into your system before ttc. Hope this helps :)

Do you know which prenatal is good and the name?
Thank you so very much for your help :hugs::hugs:

Hey hun...SO terribly sorry for your loss, absolutely heartbreaking, I'm so sorry!!

I am WTTC #2 and my OB has me taking a prescription prenatal because she said the over the counter vitamins don't have a high enough level of DHA (which is what is vital in the 1st trimester for developing our baby's brain), so if you can have your prenatal prescription refilled I would do that, otherwise the over the counter brands are all relatively the same and any will do the trick for getting you the right amount of folic acid. Also, I found this information regarding the importance of folic acid, which also states that it is in fact higher in a prescribed prenatal vitamin, perhaps not all brands, but some:

Studies that have indicated a benefit of folic acid (folate) decreasing the chance of miscarriage and organ abnormalities (specifically, neurotube defects such as spina bifida) have shown that the minimum dosage to acquire this added protection is 400 micrograms (4/10 of a full milligram) a day. Regarding folic acid, over-the-counter vitamins have this 400 micrograms dose, but prescription vitamins have a full 1000 micrograms (1 milligram).

Hope that helps :D

:hugs:

Thank you so much for replying. I have been taking 400 mic a day of Folic Acid and I also take 2 Flintstones which is another 300 mic. I don't do that good with the prenatals so my doctor who is supposed to be the best in New York said to take the 2 flintstones a day. I never really heard of doing this, but recently I heard a lot of women are like me that have a hard time with the prenatals so the doc advised them to take Flintstones. When he first told me to take Flintstones I looked at him like he was a nutbag  This was when i was pregnant, i didn't take any Folic Acid at all so now I am, but I am wondering if the Folic Acid and the Flintstones may be enough? I don't do well with Iron but I know it's important so i need to find an Iron pill that will be gentle on me. this is very confusing. :hugs::hugs:

T When he first told me to take Flintstones I looked at him like he was a nutbag

LOL!! That's funny...but I have also heard of moms who have to take the flintstones due to intolerance of prescription prenatals, so he may not be a nutbag after all :haha:

I would say it's probably enough to take the flintstones for now if they have folic acid, especially if your doc is one of the best and you trust him. I had problems keeping my vitamins down my 1st trimester and my doc had me take a B6 supplement and also prescribed me a prenatal that had only 30mg of iron (which is the amount the CDC recommends), some have more than 30mg, so that helped a lot! My husband is a doctor and said that taking folic acid in the month(s) BEFORE TTC, as well as the 1st trimester of course, actually can reduce the risk of neural tube birth defects in babies baby by up to 70 percent so that's HUGE

Sorry for the novel lol, I like to ramble :haha:

Nooooo not a novel, I am so thankful you answered me. I have been waiting so long for someone to help me, so thank you so much :hugs: See that is my problem the iron, my body for some reason cannot tolerate it. I am going to the doctor Friday to talk about maybe trying again, I am still not sure/ and I will see how to incorporate all this stuff including iron . I take 2 Flintstones which is 300 mic folic acid and a folic acid pill which is 400 so i am taking a whopping 700, i hope that is not to much . Thank you for helping me :hugs::hugs::hugs:

You're very welcome, I am so glad I can help  Sounds like you're taking a good amount of folic acid, so that's all I would worry about until you see your doc and maybe he has another option to help you get your iron :D

GL hun, keep me posted!! :hugs:

Don't worry that isn't too much. I am taking 4 Mg (as in 4 tablets a day 1000mcg each plus a prenatal) that's what the DR. ordered because I have a minor case of Spina Bifida.

sorry for your loss hun :( yeah theres no harm in taking folic acid as it'll be good for your immune systema nd should you become pregnant, your body will be ready. I think increasing your fruit and veg intake and decreasing caffeine/alcohol etc will be just as good as any prenatal before a pregnancy. Good Luck hun xx

Thank you very much. I still am not sure if I am for sure trying again I am very confused at this time. I love fruit and vegetables I hate , but i can eat them if they are in soup which I make a lot of. Alcohol I only drink maybe at a party and only red wine. I want to thank you and everyone for answering my thread I truly appreciate it :hugs::hugs::hugs::hugs::hugs:

When you started to take that much did it make you nauseous ? It made me a little. Thanks :hugs:

I am so incredibly sorry for your loss. I have not tried for a baby yet, but I am at high risk for pregnancy because I have epilepsy and my neurologist has given me the low down on folic acid...plus I'm studying to become a dietitian so I hope I can give you some insight.

Folic acid is SO critical to prenatal and preconception. In fact any woman of childbearing age should be getting at least 400mcg a day in the event that if SHE did get pregnant by accident then she would have sufficient concentrations of this vitamin. It does place your baby at risk for congenital abnormalities, spina bifida and anencephaly.

The other thing I would really like to point out is that it is of the utmost important to be aware of what medications you take if you take any as WELL AS any contraceptives because some medications can interfere with the absorption...so even if you are taking a high dose of folic acid it won't make a difference in your serum and red blood cell concentrations. I can't stress that enough...I actually just gave a presentation on folic acid status in women vs folic acid intake....it is very important to make sure that your status reflects your intake.

All the best in your dreams and goals and again I am very sorry for your loss. If you ever need to talk to someone feel free to message my inbox :hugs: ...preconception/fertility is very dear to my heart and I like to help people when I can.
